So I have my road test tomorrow. I'm going to be doing it at the Trenton, NJ DMV. Any tips? I've seen a contradiction. My instructor said I can hit 3rd gear..even 4th while turning after a red light or stop sign. But I read from some people on here "don't shift on intersection" huh? :/ also, whats popping the clutch
thank you
road test tomorrow

In Ca., no shifting in an intersection or RR tracks.

If you happen to go under an underpass make sure you look for signs above and around it
I'm still a newby only 2 yrs for me but seems they try to catch you on that one

"13.1.12 Gear Usage (For Manual Transmission)
Do not grind or clash gears. Select gear that does not
rev or lug engine. Do not shift in turns and intersections."
BTW, this entire section deals with the expectations for the On-Road Driving Test.

stop at red light
green light....let go of brake+clutch and go.... rev up rpms...2nd....start turning....rev up 3rd....complete turn (look out mirrors) 4th....5th...more depending on speed limit
so I just make the entire turn on 1st? hey that's actually easier if so lol one less thing to worry about -
I got my road test here in Southern California tomorrow as well!!!
Good luck to you!! -
Good luck and let us know how you did!

Thanks. If I can't shift at an intersection then won't I be going pretty darn slow on 1st? Unless they want you to start on 2nd or 3rd? It's weird how my instructors say it's ok to shift.

In Virginia, on a DMV roadtest no shifting in an intersection its an automatic failure. Dont need to be shifting on curves be smart and safe. After u pass do as you want just be safe and think of what your doing.

I just did mine.
Up here you need both hands on the wheel while turning so how I was taught was to take off in first or second depending on load and road...
go strait out and shift up and then start your turn, hand over hand on the wheel.
Watch the mirror 90% of the time to make sure you don't catch a car, curb, pedestrian etc.
Finish the turn by hand over hand back to center...
In reality I palm the wheel but not allowed on our test.
I aced the pretrip and missed a 5-4 shift on the road test. Fourth on that truck was a bugger so I didn't feel bad.
Good luck!
