I started school this past Monday at my local community college, a four month four day a week full time coarse. I really like the instruction but I'm still concerned about getting a job and keeping it, once I graduate.
I wanted a Class B to drive a roll-off but as I called around, seems they want at least one year experience for Class B positions, as when I talked with a manager at Fedex. How do I get this experience if I don't do OTR?
In school but are they telling the truth ?

most students take the profession thinking they are going run run run and make make make lotsa money and not even realize the downside.

I got into trucking because its been my dream job since I was a kid. Its everything and more than I thought it would be, But that's also the problem that most people think. They think its going to be a great amazing job where you'll make tons of money because the top driver at company xyz made $80,000 that year. What they don't realize is that $80k includes stops, mileage, detention, and the fact that driver may have only seen home twice that year. Their also NOT going to start out at the same pay as the top driver
I love to drive, I live for this work, but its not for everyone. Depending on the company you choose you could be required to:
-pull a load that pays less than what you were told you'd receive
-sit for hours uncompensated unless you jump through all the hoops in the right combo to get detention
-be treated like a third class citizen (talked down to by dispatch)
-work 16-18 hour days on average
Even though this isn't everything you can go through as there is a lot longer list, but its close. For me the positives far out weigh the negatives.
I will say this, I love and live for this job.
