Older trucks, yes but the majority of new trucks are pretty dang quiet. Im just saying from my experience of delivering to about 10-20 stores a day in tight, crowded parking lots, turning the radio off and cracking the window is very helpful. Company policy actually. Thatd be difficult for a deaf person.

Alot of them that are new are loud if the straight pipe it.

There are many issues that are on the medical card that can be of concern as well.

This has its merits and faults.

I would bet there are more factory exhaust new trucks than straight piped.

Regardless i have my opinion, you have yours. No changing it. I dont like the idea of it.

I am up in the air on the deaf issue. I have had to treat deaf people before.

We had a bus load of Spanish speaking persons on a bus that ran into a house. 40 some people in a small rural area influxed with non english speaking patients.

YES, I really believe the english is more important as well.

Still no difference from hearing drivers, hearing drivers can still dooze off and drive into a disabled van full of family on the side of the road changing a flat tire or something and killing them all... I am sure we all can agree on this, there are several people out there that should not have a drivers license to drive any type of motor vehicles on the public roads at all. I have seen some truckers that should not be driving at all either. Same goes with deaf drivers, I've seen some that should not drive at all. Regardless of ablity to hear, it still makes no difference, like for example a week or 2 ago, i was driving down south on hwy 10 south of Saint Cloud, MN, just right at the intersection of hwy 10 and 32nd St. SE (Co Hwy 3) that is where Bristow's is at. There was a tanker (didn't check what hazmat placard it had) was going northbound on Hwy 10, a full size combo van 53' was coming from the east on Co Hwy 3, either intended route is to across Hwy 10 to go southbound on Hwy 10, or making a turn to go northbound on Hwy 10. I did not see this happen, but what it looks like is that the van did not see the tanker coming, and made his move to across the hwy to go south, tanker hit the tractor with its side, spun the van's tractor 90 degrees making it face north (the van's engine and frame was also bent 45 degrees out of place), as the tanker jackknifed 90 degree facing west into the median ditch. It was not a pretty sight... Were they deaf drivers? i am 99% postive none of them were deaf drivers. So tell me, was it a fault on not hearing that tanker coming or perhaps was it not paying attention? I think the answer is obvious.

"Wouldnt the lawyers pick him apart? Wouldnt that make the person even more of a liability of a company?" No as long as the driver, if deaf, has a waiver, or a hearing driver has a valid current medical card, the comany will not be liable, unless there is evidence that the company made the driver do something illegal. If company did everything legally, then its the driver's responsiblity to drive safe and pay attention. The lawyer will do what is right, check into the evidence and determine from there who is responsible, defend their client. Of course the lawyer on the opposite side will try to win the case, but its always the evidence that wins the case.

deaf is deaf, person able to hear but is deaf in one ear is hard of hearing, even if needs hearing aid. There has been huge discussion within the deaf community that I have heard about if a deaf person with hearing aid is still considered deaf or not. Not going to discuss this in depth. Just my opinion is that deaf is deaf without hearing aid.

If someone is screaming or honking at you when your in parking lot or any where, it means you were not paying attention.

any vehicle still kills a person when the person behind the wheel is not paying attention like running red light, talking on phone, putting make up on, falls asleep, drunk, and so on...... Yes a 80,000# truck does more destruction than a Mini Cooper. I do get your point on the weight difference. If a truck driver runs over someone or anything that involves injury or death, it means that the driver was not paying attention. You may think and believe that you will be able to hear every scream and honks. Not everyone can and is responsbile driver to not use radio, cell phone, and anything that distracts them from driving (that does includes deaf drivers texting, eating, chatting, or whatsover). A responsible driver no matter hearing/deaf, will put anything that distracts them to the side and pay attention to all the mirrors provided, look out of all provided windows, take advantage of any reflections, shade, or any thing that will assist them with safe driving.

Everyone has their own opinion, I'm not going to force anyone to change their mind, but I will state facts, and my opinions until some one provides me a valid reason a deaf person cannot drive. If anyone can provide me a valid reason, I will walk in times square in NYC with a sign on me that says anything you wish the sign will say for a whole day, that's a promise i will make.
