Well, my reviews are in, initially.

I have trucked on ice, and 'Ice Road Truckers' had a bit toooo much drama for me .... but ya gotta get the viewers .. right ?

I have also trucked .... AND CHAINED ... over 'The Coke' aka 'Ol' #5' (well, NEW #5 to us old guys .... )

I just watched ( in my copious free time ..... ) an episode of (see thread title).

Kudos. I was VERY impressed with the emphasis on CHAINS ... and the lack of training there-of !!!

Even the recordings of radio jabber ..... "Yeah, I saw 10,000 trucks at the bottom putting on chains, but I thought they were going someplace else .... "

Now, before anyone gets ETHNIC on me, I've heard the following from many drivers: " I've never put on chains before !"

Now, I don't care if you're from Iran (like the guy on TV) .. or from PEI ..... or from Texas ...... if you live in a part of the world (North America) that has the potential to have hills ... and snow !! .... and DOT chain-up laws !! ( BC, AB, WA, OR, CA Etc Etc ..... is it me .... or shouldn't drivers be trained in how to use them ...... ? AND, if they are trained in chain use initially, shouldn't there be continuing education there of ??

I know that in certain US States, if you cause a wreck or tie-up because you didn't chain up .... it's gonna cost you and the company $$$$$. Maybe it's not enough $$ ?? Maybe it was just TV again ... but I saw alot of STUPID 'Coke' delays that were preventable.

    Just my 2 cents ....

BTW - That Davis dude from Hope has some SERIOUSLY nice big hooks and ResQ gear - Maybe that bunch from O'Hare in Chicago can be entertained for once !

Chaining is something they just don't teach in driving school. When I drove in the oilfeild I was lucky enough to have another driver show me how to the first time Ineeded to chain. Just some random guy from another company too. Lucky for me also my chains were missing links and the guy was good enought to fix them for me as he had spare parts too. Now I can throw them in about 15mins and off in 5. Sucks on car carriers eh speedloader lol.

Another big problem is most of those guys don't chain until there spun out halfway up the hill. That guy with the empty trailer who they showed chaining up should have done it at the bottom esp if empty. Same with those chip trucks. I've learned its easier to chain up before then after when driving in the mud on the flat never mind on a hill in the snow. Also loved the guy who was trying to hold the chains while his buddy drove forward lol. Lucky he didn't lose a finger!

I have to admit, I have never put chains on a car hauler. Haven't needed to on the East Coast. Closest I got to the Rockies with a car hauler was Calgary, then I turned back around. Last time I was over the big hills, I was pulling oversize.

And as far as buddy with the empty deck putting on his chains THEN trying to crawl off the shoulder on that grade ...... I would have been pretty friggin suprised if it worked. And yeah, the tag team duo chaining the drives on the fly - that was my favorite. Now, there actually is a method for chaining up in motion ...... but, uhm, that was DEFINIATELY not it !

Your missing out on the fun of trying to cram your arms inside the wheel wells lol. Another thing I did notice is no one chains both drive axles. Do they only carry chains for one axle? Lol I'd be chaining both and trying to get up the hill before I'd call my boss with a 400 tow bill.

Cottrell tractors, I think, would be easier then Boydstuns or Delavans - At least the ones I've seen look like they have more room in the wells around the drives, even with lo-pro rubber. And yeah, why just chain one axel ? Go big, or go home.

And what's up with buddy whining about a $400 tow bill ???? Are you kidding me ? First, HE was the one stuck AND I'd count my lucky stars if I got a $400 bill from a big hook .... I figure that he'd left off a zero at the end !!

Good thing you have a bunk - I'm in a day cab by day and Corp Lodging by night.

Yeah - See ... just goes to show you how old I am ..... I use my phone just to call people .... I think with this new one I have I had to read as far as page 36 in the manual before it told how to get/give a call. Oh yeah, pages 1 to 35 devoted to pictures, videos, browsing, the meaning of life ..... blah blah blah.

Driver told me once I could use Google Maps from my phone to get to where I wanna go .... I tried that ONCE and ended up in the middle of a quiet subdivision at 2am !! Besides that, with my trusty Rand McNally by my side, the battery won't go dead, and I won't suddenly loose my tower or satt signal !

Ok, I not that technically challenged .....

Quirings has done a good job getting some family members off the Coq at various times. Gripe from menfolk-it would be nice if the signs eastbound at Hunter Creek would show that chains were needed on the Coq. Advance notice would be great in case some wanted to zip up Canyon instead, and not get a surprise in Box Canyon with chaining up. Options for motorists too if signage at Hunter Creek notified folks in advance of the turnoff to the Canyon, when Coq is just freaking miserable Have found that Drive BC can be late on posting chaining notice for Coq on it website. What's the best cell phone service for the Coq. Menfolk have found dead spots with Telus. One has just changed to Bell. One found that the Virgin cell he purchased to use in Manitoba (cause Telus cell did not work in Manitoba:) worked on the Coq where Telus wouldn't. Any of you guys with iPhones and how is your service on the Coq with Telus, Bell, etc.?
