Today was a good day. Got to Laredo early and was able to do my drop this afternoon instead of tomorrow morning. Now I am relaxing in my condo at the Laredo yard. My FM said there is plenty of freight to get me out of here but it has to clear the border first.

About 100 miles out I started seeing a bunch of Border Patrol vehicles. Made this Arizona boy kinda home sick. :)

Hey BigM, I will be starting with Averitt flatbed next week. I am in Memphis. Does Averitt pull much out of this area? When dispatched, do the FM make it a purpose to try and get you reloaded to return to your home terminal area to reload again, or, do they just send you where ever the next available load is going? I guess what I am asking is, what is their general game plan to manage their freight? Thanks for all your info. I have been following you for a few weeks now.

If im not mistaking your just like any other flatbed company. You go out and you load and unload at different factories etc... I've been to Memphis a bunch and never noticed any flatbeds laying around. The closest terminal that had flatbeds was in Tupelo when I had to stop for an emergency on my way to winfield for a swap.

Btw sorry if I stepped on Bigm toes there just figured I could help you out quicker.

As i understand it they get dispatched just like Truck Load. You go to a customer, pick up, deliver and then get dispatched again and get home every weekend just like the rest of us. The flat bed drivers out of Chattanooga I have talked to average 2500-2800 miles per week and are usually stacked on their loads. They get a dispatch for the next load usually before they deliver the one they are on. That happens in truck load but it's not an every day thing, at least for me anyway.

I delivered my load from Loredo to Vance, AL and am shut down at a TA in Cottondale. FM told me he'll get me a load home tomorrow morning as I have some things I need to get done this weekend. My M/C has a charity ride on Saturday and I need to be there early.

Thus far this week I am at 2100 miles with about 350 between me and home.

Also, other than the much more bouncy ride I am loving my Freightliner. So much roomier and it drives great. There are things I miss about the Volvo but after this ride the sleeper in it would seem claustrophobic.

Have you seen the new volvo's? The new automatic transmissions in them are so much better than the older volvo's...You can especially tell the difference when you backing up. No more delayed response on the transmission so very little jerking around.

@Wrightracing: It's been almost a year since I've been to tupelo so I can't be completely accurate on that. I do know when I went to get fuel there last they had 3-4 trucks in there with flatbed attached to them with no loads.

I went last thursday to the doctor and he wanted me to take a home sleep study to see where i stand and he was suppose to get back in touch with me this week but nothing so far. I will probably call tomorrow to see if the results are in.

Big Mike, I just wanted to thank you for your diligence in keeping us all posted on your experience with Averitt, I, for one, am impressed. My husband is finishing up his first week of school and met with an Averitt recruiter, he called on his lunch break and asked me to research the company. You are not the first person to have a lot of positive feedback, which I like, but yours is much more detailed and personal which helps me to gauge what to look for in *other* companies, as well as what to be aware and cautious of. My husband served 14 years in the military and is a very 'follow the rules' kind of guy and Averitt seems to have the type of structure he is most comfortable with. With a 6th deployment facing our career, we either had to move on or re-enlist and deal with more of what comes to a military family in the face of war- so, like you, he is an optimistic "the glass is half full" kind of guy. Let's face it, a few bumps in the road, as it were, don't compare to life's other more serious travesties. Again, I appreciate your candor and your diligence...you have certainly been a big help! Safe driving!

I live in Cleveland and thinking about going into the trucking industry. How often do they get you home? I'm wanting to do regional stuff.

Tell me about it. I turned the Pete in Thursday and was given an 07 Volvo. It's not in bad shape but it does have over 752,000 miles on it. The sleeper is so much smaller than the Pete. I'm hoping for a Cascadia next. I'm a big boy so the Volvo feels really cramped.
