i agree with the above the ur driving record to be on the safe side as far as smaller companies look around where u live now and and dont be afraid to ask local drivers u may not need to go OTR. when i say smaller companies i mean companies with less then 150 trucks

Your issue of driving isn't necessarily with the companies themselves its with the insurance companies. Some are more forgiving then others. Like the other poster said the smaller companies may have more lenient insurance to allow you to drive. Whatever you do though don't ask a school recruiter. They will likely tell you that you will have no problem, here sign on the dotted line and write the check for $6500,00!

Call around to several companies and make sure to get a good average of answers. Some of the mega-carriers tell you what ever you want to hear to get you to orientation and then they may say your record isn't good enough, sending you home. I can tell you for sure though that a reckless offense is very serious. Usually compared to a speeding ticket for 15mph or more over the posted speed. Three years after you got the ticket it will be clear of your MVR and then you will be free to do whatever.

If you are planning on getting into this career then you really need to keep your license clean.

Well I've been checking craigslist and there are a ton of cdl hiring ads...I think tomorrow I will start going through them and see if someone is able to give me a shot....Might take a while there are a lot of ads.

Truck drivers get those days off? Wow one more plus to the wonderful world of truck drivers.

I’m not a driver but I’ve been at my job 20 years and I got X-mas off once. :-(

Hmmm, not sure how this is going to work out....But I've had a NY license for around 8 months now....Before that I had a NH license...It was about one year ago that I got the reckless conviction, and that was in NH on my NH license....When my NY is run it comes up empty....

Does anyone know if any possible employers will be able to run my old license ?

On your application you will be asked what states you have had a license held in. What you answer is your choice. A lot of these mega-carriers have their own private investigators whose job it is to just investigate drivers. You could get hired on and three months later they may find out you lied on your app and send you packing. Have seen this happen more than once. If your goal is to work for a smaller company you may not have a problem.

You did make a funny though, Xmas and the holidays off..... Part of your statement is true. Though you may not be actually driving on that day you most likely will be in a parking lot celebrating at the flyinJ buffet!

Another question - How important is it to get hired by a company that has a base near your home ? Is it recommended so that they can get you home for days off ? Or so that they can get maintenance done on the truck ?

I live in Buffalo, what if I got a job with a company in Kansas or something ? Would they still get me home ?

BTW: when I say home I mean like once every 3/4 months is all I need....So would it not make much a difference then since I won't be home much ?

Regardless of where the company is based, if they hire out of Buffalo there shouldn't be any issues. All OTR/Regional companies have their own designated hiring areas. That reckless will probably keep you from getting on with a mega-carrier. As suggested look into smaller companies, although I doubt they're going to talk to you much till you have your license.
