I have worked for LW Miller for many years. On the surface they are a nice company. Nestled in the beautiful picturesque Cache Valley of Logan Utah, you arrive at what appears to be a very nice, professional facility. LW Miller no doubt offers fine and new equipment.
When you arrive for orientation for the reefer division you are greeted by a kindly recruiter that is full of smiles and treats you very nice. (That behavior goes away quickly once you are hired, unless she REALLY likes you.) Then you get turned over to the Safety Department. LW's Safety Director Dan recently left the company which is a shame. Most people hate their Safety department, but this guy was really fair, easy to talk to, good about teaching and training, and really seemed concerned about the drivers. I know a lot of people would grumble, but its usually just the ones that do stuff wrong, and don't care to change. Dan seemed to want us all to be the best and get home safe. The current man Rustin that took over was his assistant, and he is generally decent. Unfortunately I don't have the 100% faith in him as I did Dan. Rustin is a bit of a butt kisser, doesn't have the other Directors knowledge, and a tad weak. Word around the fleet is that Rustin screwed Dan over with the owner and that is why Dan left. Unfortunately I do believe that. It seems that Rustin was a bit power hungry. I talked to a Livestock driver for LW Miller and he tells me that they are running totally illegal, and he says it got worse since the other Director left. Reefer dispatchers have gotten worse since the other Director left when it comes to force dispatching us. What I thought was cool was that the owner came in and said hello the first day we were there. Course, if you talk to him for more than a few minutes after that first day, you may as well be talking to cattle, his attention is short if you aren't at his level. The payroll manager Warren is awesome. The HR man Paul seems like a guy you need to be super careful with. He is really snobby and high horsed too.
As for the reefer dispatchers. When you first meet them they are all so happy and nice. The division is small enough where you are a name not a number. The first 3-6 months are great. Then the honeymoon ends. Again its a "unless you're a favorite" situation. Reed the division manager is a complete tool. He has no idea what is going on in the division and doesn't listen to anything you say. He is always on the defense. He came over from EA Miller/JBS and acted like he was going to save the world. Since his coming on we seem to have reduced our fleet by 25% or more. Craig the head dispatcher is the worst one about force dispatching. He is all about moving loads regardless of hours, illness, or safety. He is full of intimidation, manipulation, and threats. If you fail to follow his orders, you lose a ton of miles. Scott is a complete jerk. He has got to be the rudest man I have met in dispatch. Ladd and Stephanie are ok. They work hard and are pretty decent. Larry the maintenance coordinator is pretty temperamental too. Don't call him after hours with a breakdown. Fortunately I am on their good side. So my miles are pretty good. I just worry about their livelihood considering everything that has been going on with the loss of trucks and they big problem with force dispatch and illegal running in Livestock. From what I understand the bull haulers are on last warning as it is. I worry because it seems if they lose their cheese account the company is done. They have most all their eggs in one basket thanks to the genius of their division manager Reed. The recruiter Darcie also does the payroll. Don't ask her too much. She is like a viper and will bite.
So ... All that glistens isn't always gold. Why am I at LW Miller? Because I am old enough to know that where ever you go isn't much better, and everyone has a few bad apples. Trucking is trucking. I get my miles. I keep my head down, try to do what I can legally, and stay out of conflict and the office as much as possible. If I find out where the old Safety Director went, I will probably go there. The grass is always greener for others and they jump from job to job. I have gone that route and don't need to unless the company gets more and more unsafe. We'll see. There are my two cents. Sometimes being a number isn't so bad.
LW Miller - All that glistens isn't actually gold.

Hey Texas man nice to finally hear from a fellow LW's driver i worked for the company back in 05/06 i was 1 of the many drivers who came over on a H2B work visa same deal we got to meet LW Miller in person i thought wow yeah and the nice lady in safety real cute I'm not sure whether you ever met Dale at Dispatch we all thought he had it in for us Aussies and Kiwi's you know the old don't trust the foreigner retinue they'll steal your job however I've since spoken to a few American drivers and he was giving them just as much of hard time the good news however is Millers finally gave him the boot of course he heads for the opposition down at Hyrum EA Miller however they had far less patience with him then LW's and he got the boot again hopefully he's working for Central or Swift, he'd get along just fine with them. Apart from him though i can't really complain about the company they always paid on time never once did i have an issue with pays Brian in Accounts did a splendid job and Tammy out at the front desk was brilliant i hope she's still working there? Well anyways i wonder what happened to all the guys that got green cards are there any Aussies kiwi's or Brits still there?
-
Best I know there is an Kiwi, an Aussie, and a Brit left. Yes I knew Dale and he was a horrible soul. Scott took over the hostility after he was let go. Hated to see Safety Dan go, he had a good handle on the company and sucked us out of a lot of garbage. Some had hard feelings about him, but when you asked why, they couldn't say. Mostly of the position he represented I reckon. He was a good Director. If I find out where he went, I am going there. Things are falling apart at LW's it seems. Fleets are shrinking, key people leaving, others getting the boot except for those who should. (Reed Baldwin) Dan cut loose the cute safety woman years ago. Replaced her with a guy named Brian who was pretty useless. After Brian came Rustin. He seemed to work pretty well with Dan and people like him. But word on the radio is he screwed over Dan. I could see that. Guess that goes along with the feeling that things are falling apart. We lose any more trucks we may all be looking for a new company.

Hey Tex nice to hear from ya wow only 3 foreigners left it really does look like LW's are going down hill i'd actually heard that Larry had died although someone else said it was the other Larry the guy in charge of Maintenance . I was thinking of going over and asking about a job but not sure whether theres anyone there that still would know me is Brian still doing the Pays? Well anyway stay say dude.
-
Nobody died. Both Larry's still alive. Not sure what Brian you are talking about. The only Brian I knew was the assistant safety guy.
-
Its so long ago well 7 years i though it was Brian that did the pays but i may be mistaken, that was back in the days when we were allowed to go upstairs and talk with the safety officer and accounts they were always pleasant to talk to, i see all the buildings been renovated i went to go to the office last time and saw the door and been moved where Larry's office used to be is now the main entry i'd heard that Larry sold off his live stock division in Greenly CO i noticed they don't wash as many livestock trailers now .

well its interesting i just had a chat with an immigration Lawyer he was telling me quite a few guys that came over from Australia New Zealand and England had been scammed by the lady that had organized the visa's back home in Oz . Apparently none of them got there Green cards although i caught up with 1 bloke back in 2008 and said he'd gotten his right to work card , another 1 got a green card cause he married a US citizen not sure whether anyone else has heard anything about this . As i've mentioned previously i had no issues with LW Miller but then i didn't apply for a green card.
-
Just an up date on things i must print a retraction the immigration lawyer who told me the aussies and kiwi's and Pommies didn't get there green cards was actually incorrect was mistaken i was repeating what he apparently claimed i've since spoken with one of the aussies who did get a green card although it did take about 7 years which meant they had to get a right to work card and special permission to leave the USA and come back but yes TFU did a good job apparently some guy from NZ was quite upset i think he went under the name examerican basically blaming LWM and TFU for all his problems the truth is if you come to the USA on a H2B work visa it clearly states it is a temporary work visa so at some point you must return home so its important to consider if its viable to come over to the USA in the first place, personally if i had a young family theres no way i would do that its unviable which is what examerican did and paid the price. If your single or married with all your children gone from home then yeah come on over and drive i personally found LWM paid a good rate of around 32c per mile the guys that stuck with it are on around 38c per mile now which is pretty good you can probably find better rates but then what kind of company do you get. Millers were always reliable they paid on time and kept there trucks in good condition.

Lets see 1 I should've never left lw miller not to sure why this Texas guy still works there if I had all the neg stuff I'd leave ok so I left right after Reed got there I think Craig got the raw end of that deal but really Craig's intimidation factor is not there I never saw it he is right about Dan though all the dispatchers kept me busy didn't bother me because I did WHATEVER it took to be on time the thing about running outlaw it's more the drivers choice I knew plenty of drivers at lw that ran legal myself I ran to make money and learned real quick how to pencil whip a log book I stayed out a week longer and when I got back to Logan I bob tailed home to San Diego ca Darci there's no reason to piss her off it's more fun to keep her smiling Brian didn't miss a step after Dan left and that all had to so with the cattle div when the state red taking away bonuses that's when I started looking elsewhere and ended up at JCT and gave that one up to run team from San Diego to Columbus, Ohio home three days every week and gross 1100 a week but would still drop it and go back to lw but when I left I turned my truck in on Sunday no one was thee and reed claims there was damage I'm calling bs on that all in all I did whatever was asked of me got all the miles and never kissed one persons ### it's still the best driving job I had someone tell darci Alan Postema said hello
-
Love to hear from anyone that's still with LW's we were one of the smaller transport companies in the USA so not as many in here as the larger companies, with smaller companies at least you get to personally know your dispatcher i found Millers dispatchers overall quite good like they had their issues however so did i it was just good to know they were understanding i find if you speak and treat people well you will always get on with most people.
