It's federal law - you can't have a CDL-A license AND a CDL permit at the same time. If you come in with a little experience that occured some years ago, you'll be asked to go through PSD - thus you need a permit. If you are an inexperienced CDL-holder (graduated from school within the last 6 months) you start as a C-seat, and don't go through PSD - you don't need a permit.

    It's two completely different situations.

I guess my question is why someone can't go thru PSD with a CDL-A in their wallet as opposed to a permit. It seems silly to make them give it up, get a new one, then transfer back.

    Elchery,

This may sound odd, as I don't even have my class A yet, but learn on reefer. Tanker adds another layer of complexity that you don't need when first starting out.

So I learned while driving class-B tanker...

    Elchery Thanks this.

Most of you will be assigned a trainer in the reefer division, for the simple reason that it is the largest division at Prime and there are many more trainers in the reefer division than any of the others. If you desire to run flatbed or tanker, its possible that a trainer will be looking for a trainee when you come up for it, but don't count on it. The bottom line is that the biggest goal that you have to meet is learning to safely drive and manuever a large combination vehicle - so it really doesn't matter whether it is a reefer, tanker or flatbed. Specific training for tanker and flatbed can be done in about 30 days after your upgrade with a driver from one of those divisions.

    Elchery Thanks this.

I think IP is the only one that made it past the three year mark, other than me, but I left a while back, for greener...... That was before my time, but we lost a few while I was there. One had a heart attack parked at the terminal, took a few days before they found him. Kansas city death was probably the worst I remember since the co driver was in the bunk when it plunged down to the railroad tracks.....
