First mountain I ever went down I applied my brakes to slowly. About half way down the smoke started to roll. It was an unbelievably bad feeling. I learned my lesson and it never happened since and I hope never will again.

Whoa! So, what do you do now? The stabbing method (from what I gather) is the best way, it allows them to cool between applying, but I am a rookie and only speculating.

I do the stab method. The mistake I made is I didn't stab them hard enough.

Well, I hope that when I am driving with a trainer for the 3-4 weeks of OTR training that we do go down a grade that requires a safe braking method, to feel the weight of the load and to ensure I know what to do. It is one thing to discuss in a classroom style atmosphere, but to actually experience it is (hands on) is where I think I will learn it correctly.

I don't know if you are doing 48 plus Canada or just midwest regional but either way you live near the gorge on I40 and will surely be going down that soon. They have a brake check area you are required to stop at before starting down the hill. The right gear and your jake brake will keep you safe. An occasional stab at the brakes will keep you from over revving the engine. If you go slow enough, you will be bored with it by the time you reach the bottom.

Anything east of Colorado is really just a hill. You won't see a real mountain until you get to the Rockies. But Pittsburgh really sucks.

If all else fails, hills with over a 7% grade are required to have emergency runaway ramps. These are straight off the right or left side and are paved with deep sand and go uphill. That will stop you. You will need a tow truck to get out.

You really have some brass balls starting out flat bedding. You would be better off going with Maverick. They have the best flatbed training. Those big coils are no joke. I have also seen a lot PVC pipe fall off too. Best of luck to you.

First, I did a lot of soul searching on this and CT's FLATBED division was the right fit for my situation. It is only SE REGION for the most part with some TX and some OH and IN. I contacted MAVERICK and I am not in their hire zone. I was literally 4.2 miles from CT's hire zone (inside of it of course). I am sure I will be seeing BLACK MOUNTAIN in Western NC and Eastern TN area. I have had a blast driving those roads in my CORVETTE, but I am not looking forward to it at all in a COMBO loaded to 80K.

I applied with Maverick. I thought if the flatbed driving didn't work out, I can move to the reefer division with them. I haven't looked into CT. I'll be starting my 4th week of driving school next week. I got to drive us back to school from the Pilot on Thursday. I was driving like a grandma and my instructor kept reminding me that you can also get a ticket for going too slow, LOL. I didn't want to drive so slow, but I was dreading changing gears and then having to downshift again through the traffic!! :) Perhaps automatic transmission trucks might not be a bad idea after all!

I honestly was not going to go with CT because they have automatic transmissions, but again CT really fits my situation best and that is why I choose them. In fact, I was already setup a week and a half ago and changed my mind to go somewhere that had straight drives and went back last minute because they just fit my situation best. I have heard great things about Maverick. Good luck with the remainder of your school and be safe!

Well, the drive down to Savannah was pretty nice and it was a great day to take the vette out for a drive.

ALL checked into my room at COMFORT INN & SUITES. I went ahead and paid for my own room. I got the discounted rate that CT gets and got my own suite. It really is nice. Tomorrow begins at 0700 and it consists of a DOT Physical, FIT tests and a graded drive around. If I make it through all of this, I will be able to move on in Orientation to Wednesday. So far everyone has been super nice and my car ended up with all kinds of attention. lol
