I drove a auto for 2 years with USX and 9 months will total and I'll say this.

Never once had a traction break in any kind of weather.

Truck never missed a gear or grinded anything. Smooth shift every single time.

As far as ppl saying the gears can't be controlled. 100% false. You can switch to manual mode and hold whatever gear you want. On the lower gears when braking the truck will seem like it's coasting. Simply tap the accelerated and it will get the correct gear instantly .

They're not so great for winter driving in some instances... ever get stuck in the snow and try to rock your way out? Can't do that with an auto. On slick roads I also don't want a computer deciding when to shift for me and lose traction, especially in a corner. Otherwise auto's are nice from a lazy driver standpoint. I have both and each has it's own merits.

Read my above post. You can lock into manual and shift on your own. Computer won't shift in manual mode.

The shifts are so gentle it wouldnt cause a unsafe situation in any weather.

There's no clutch to use on the ultra shift models so the only way the wheels will turn is if your on the accelerator

So why say the computer will shift on slick roads when that's not the case ?

If you don't put it into manual mode, it will. I've lost traction during a shift sequence on an icy corner in Yellowstone because I forgot to put it into manual mode. Not every auto is the same, and not every truck has the ultrashift. How about just letting others contribute their 2 cents?

The autos ive driven needed a healthy helping of the accelorator (sp) when backing. Theyd go from not moving to flying backwards. Manuals i can control the clutch alot better for a smoother back. I also do city p&d so i have some really tight backs that require finess to avoid parked cars, poles, ect. Just my opinion about autos. I dont like them, rather deal with a manual, even in heavy traffic, than have an auto.

Although I prefer autos because they give better fuel consumption , better clutch life , less downtime and therefore less cost in a fleet operation.
I have to say the ones we have are not as good at heavy slow maneuvering as a manual in low range.
I believe some of the newer ones are but I have no experience myself.

I have rocked my way out with an auto. Its all about working with what you've got and using finesse instead of force but it can be done.
