CC's are often a great choice but not always. The one near where I went to school was a joke. The instructors had almost no experience and the training was no better than a CDL mill. There is a huge difference between schools. Do your research. I am at orientation and after my road test, the Safety Officer told me I was one of the best rookies he had ever seen. I am very thankful to the school I went to for the training I received. Their focus was not just getting your CDL but helping you become a truck driver.

In response to this: Community colleges often interview the students before accepting them into class (just like getting a job). Ask them lots of questions, including what the instructor's experience is. I had 3 instructors, 2 were long time veteran drivers, who drove doubles and triples over mountains and so on. The third had been a driver for around 10 years and was a younger family man. They were very inspirational, and helpful.

Always research anything you do. Caveat emptor--Let the buyer beware.

I go to a private school in Murfreesboro tn. Great instructors, right now very few students so we get tons of driving time. One day this week I was in a truck by myself for over three hours, which was very helpful. I graduate tomm, & thanks to the low amount of students I was able to get way more one on one instruction. I researched the school I attend on here, & got great info. I love this site. If you need any info, type it into the search engine. Best of luck

Went to Community College in GA. Great school!!! I applied for grants program and my cost was $ 100.00 including DOT physical, books, road test, everything. 3 month program, 5 days a week and sometimes Saturdays too. 2 weeks in the classroom, then 2 weeks range practice only and then classroom + range + road practice till the end. Huge range!! 5 students per truck/instructor. Recruiters visited us, ATA visited us... We also had defensive driving classes, watched lots of videos, took lots of written tests, practiced hooking, unhooking, slided tandems,... Dekalb Technical College in Ga is the best CDL school in GA. Some of their instructors are still active truck drivers and some are retired with 30 yrs experience. They also train Marta bus drivers and Ga Power folks.

I went to Crowder College in Neosho, MO. They had some of the best instructors there. I learned a lot. It is a 5 week course. Well worth it. Only drove for a couple months and sat out a year. Had to do a refresher. Went to a community college in KS and one of the instructors was horrible. So they are not all the same. I definitely would recommend Crowder.
