larger companies have less professional drivers, thus to avoid liability, they are always up-to-date on the latest laws (mostly because they have the ATA pushing these laws, like this elog nonsense)
whereas a small outfit, the owner is not really worried or had not previously been worried, because if it aint broke, dont fix it, they were not aware of the political shenanigans taking place, they didnt have accidents, occasionally someone got a ticket, it was paid and that was it
but today, you get a ticket, it stays in the clouds forever, along with court fees and the likes
look at the hours of service, who would have thought the 5 & 5 was a bad thing, no one but some politicians, so they pass the 11/14, and now that isnt good enough, they want to make it an 8 hr day and cut out 2 34hr restarts (like that really makes a difference)
so yes, the larger companies do pay more attention, most likely because their drivers are doing the most damage
look at the guys touting elogs here, how many are owner operators or even working for a small company vs the ones who are working for these larger carriers telling us how we better get with the program or get left behind and declared outlaws
i have even seen it said, if everyone doesnt do elogs, they are cheating, .............well, no one told you to accept it in the first place, that was YOUR choice, not ours. You happened to believe the "by 2012 everyone will be doing elogs", well God bless OOIDA, that hasnt happened yet and it looks like it is still a long way off
the mega carriers placed a huge bet on it being the law and now they are losing, so they removed the speed limitations on some trucks to make up the difference
this is a fight and it oughta be, but sadly many drivers are leading their own demisevolvodriver01 Thanks this. -

Again, being ignorant of the regulations you are supposed to be following is a poor excuse. If it aint broke don't fix it? Sweet, let's never ever change anything again. Progress? Screw it, things aint broke. The technology is here for eLogs, it works for my company. On paper we'd be one step closer to being out of business, not because we don't have customers and nice equipment....but because too many drivers weren't following the hours of service. Were they ignorant of the regulations? Probably, but after educating them multiple times it was still the same drivers that violated. Hmmm, they were "old school" truckers that new how to drive. I've heard the same arguments from them that I'm hearing from you. Most all of them said they were going to quit...less than 10% did. Those that stuck it out are making more money, and are better rested today than they were a year ago....on paper.
Are eLogs right for everyone? No. Are they bad, and/or unsafe? No. They don't stop your from violating, so all this talk about I'm not stopping 30 miles from home stuff. Don't keep driving, what's the difference between a false log and a violation? Other than it's easier to prove the intent on your false log. -
