Get your year in otr and then do local

Why oh why do students wait until the last minute? Your options are limited as a newbie, and it will take time to find something that fits what you want.
Try food service companies, maybe tanker, some specialty haulers like logging or grain. These tend to be off on weekends, but you will have a hard time getting in with no experience.
If none of that works, get into a company that promises home weekly. You will only be home for your 34hr restart, and it may not be on a weekend, but you will get home. Then you can continue the job hunt on your day off. Some new drivers do get a "plum" job within their first year, but it does require some effort and a bit of luck- being in the right place at the right time.Big Don and lonewolf4ad Thank this. -
Even with the plum jobs and dedicated it's not a guarantee you'll be home weekly. These "kids" really need to study their options before making the decisions.

Agreed, but it doesn't do much good to tell them that after they've graduated. And I can't say much to them anyway, since I did very little research before signing up for school. I'm just as guilty as they are.

Grain would highly depend on who your working for. If your loading from the source it involves weekends, nights and whenever the combine is running. Anything farming has a different schedule. It's either a workday or a day off. Mon, tues, wed etc. has nothing to do with it lol.
When it rains that's generally when you get your days off in the fall.lonewolf4ad Thanks this. -
This forum has DAC reports on both those companies- go do some reading. It's a good idea to Google them, too. Decide for yourself what's good for you.Swimmin' Deep Thanks this.

Plenty of mom and pop outfits will hire newbies.. My old company did this all the time.. Many turned out to be good drivers..

Looks to me like your main concern needs to be your work, NOT your home time. Sure there are jobs out here that will give you weekends off. Mostly LTL/local. If you are willing to do some grunt work, rather than just driving, look to your local LTL companies. UPS, FEDEX or other similar types of companies might work for you. Food service, (US Foods, Sysco that type of company) or beer or pop routes might work for you.
But if you are hurting for bucks, and need to get to work pronto, don't limit yourself. Get your apps out there and be prepared to do the job they are hiring for. After you get some whiskers, you can start looking for something that is more what you want.
