In most States the wight limit is 34,000lbs on tandems. The fifth wheel is behind the first drive axle, close to the center of the tandem. Actually can be slid between the two. My 6x2 will definitely will have differential lock and deflatable rear bags.

Yup, same as here on most forward position. This is how I use it normally too. If I am close to my maximum gross weight, I have to slide a little bit back (3-4 inches), other way, I am overweight on the steer axle. This is back side of the set back steer on the aero trucks. No problem on drives.

My 6x4 is the same but the tags run with the fifth wheel further forward for better weight distribution when axle is lifted and both are on sliders! With a diff lock and deflatable bags you shouldn't have any problems. I like my 6x4 but if I was buying my own truck again it would be a 6x2 for the fuel savings alone

It make sense for lifted tag, but just for low speed traction I do not think it is necessary.

A 6x2 tag axle with a diff lock on the drive is without doubt the way to go Oram...but you will need a lifting device for the trailing axle...otherwise you will get caught on soft ground some day as the drag of the trailing axle will be enough to leave you helpless....

The lifting is an other animal, I do not want to go there. If I need, I will keep some chain, and chain up the tag to the frame. But I do not go to any soft ground...... Some snow and ice can be....

Nope, it doesn't have to lift fully, just deflate the bags on snow or ice and you'll be fine! A lift valve and bag isn't hard to fit though!

Just a quick question Icee, here we normally fit single wheels to the tag while I notice nordic guys like yourself usually fit double wheels, maybe I'm a bit thick but is there a reason for this? Just curious!
