Are you embarassed to be a truck driver

Be proud with what you do...Always! It's not a easy job and you work your butt off and at the end of the day everyone his here for one thing...make money. My father always told me to find another job that doesn't require a degree and make 50k a year. You won't find it period.

 

Eh? I know an elevator mechanic who gets nearly 100k a year, my union electrician uncle makes $75k there are plenty of jobs without degrees that make over 50k, let's not get into hyperbole. Trucking is generally more accessible than other decently paying Jobs, and you have flexibility where you live, after all not many elevators to work on in rural Wyoming, but it is hardly the only thing period.

As for me, I am not really embarrassed, but I am hardly proud. I would much rather have a nice quiet office job, where I work 9-5 and be home every weekend. Trucking does however pay the bills, so I will stay here until I finish the certs I am going for.

 

I have BS degrees in Mathematics and Business Administration. For me it is not about money or ego but rather my sanity and living with myself. Being mobile and experiencing bouts of freedom satisfy most of my needs. Sitting inside and kissing butt on a daily basis made me miserable. Money will be comparible in a year or two.

Live for yourself. Be true to yourself. Everything else will fall in place.

 

I am not a "truck driver"

I am a "independent freight relocation specialist".

 

That job has lots of ups and downs.

 

Sort of like driving the recycling truck...you know..where business is really "picking up."

 

Either would be better than driving the 'honey wagon' . . . that job is real s . . . .

 

That is one job that really sucks big time.
All day long you have to take customers 5#*$.

 

I agree completely even though I'm not yet driving. I admit there was a small part of me, a long time ago, that felt a little funny about getting into trucking. I have no family that drives a truck and back then I only had the image of BJ and the Bear to go on. Like I said, that was a long time ago and I was ignorant.

I'm only trying to get into the profession right now and it's the only thing that appeals to me in my life as far as future careers. Screw those that look down on you. What other jobs give you the kind of freedom, responsibility and flexibility to determine your success than that of a professional truck driver. It is as professional of a job as any out there. I think it's an enviable position. Having gone to law school for a while and subsequently working for attorneys for a private firm and then supporting in-house attorneys, they will tell you first that most of them are not happy in their profession regardless of how much money you make. I was told to get out while I could. Run, I believe they told me. I heeded this advice and never looked back (other than to review my outstanding student loans). For me, with no kids and no wife to speak of this profession fits me perfectly and the first girl I meet that looks down on me I'll walk away from with a quickness. Don't justify what you do to anyone if they are that ignorant. Any potential partner should care more about you doing what makes you happy rather than your title. Keep your head up.

 

Ok here's the deal. There are a lot of people who are truck drivers now who never would have been truck drivers if 2008 never happened. From their perspective, they are in living in diminished circumstances. I am a truck driver because its my job. It's how I make a living. That's it. I am neither embarrassed or excessively proud of my job. Because its a job.
