A rule of thumb I've developed has to do with the fact that the further you are from "The City" the more slack the troopers give you on chincy laws. Methinks that driving across the open desert, the only Chippy who'll pull you over for doing a couple over 55 is Comercial Enforcement.... and he might just pull you over for an ispection anyway. Unless you're aproaching a freeway split, or a very rare right lane offramp, stay in the right 2 lanes (on 3+ lanes of travel.) You may want to consider fighting the ticket... it's a CA ticket, so it probably won't be cheap, and neither will the lawyer, however, if he can ensure there are not points against your record, it will be worth it.

Many don't know the law on a 3 lane that your suppose to stay on the right lane ONLY except to pass and you must return back to the 3rd lane. It will depend on the CHP what kind of mood his in if he want's to cite you. I've had a couple of times a Evil Knievel come up next to me and wave me to pull back in the 3rd lane and kept going, which I was but guess he figured I was out there a lil to long.

Yeah, it's a tad un-fair, I agree, not posting this law RE: no trucks in the left lane of 3 or left 2 of 4. I'm pretty much a life time resident of Ca. and don't have a problem driving ANYWHERE in the state. But, if the OP was in San Jose area, that means he has driven a few miles already in the state and should have noticed he didn't see any trucks operating in the left ln. anywhere, right ?

Actually I've been there quite a few times, and have done it and seen it done as well. Most will do the same as I was doing, pass and get back over. Obviously I had never been caught before, nor had the drivers I seen doing it.

Yeah, I see trucks all the time running the wrong lane and NOT getting pulled over, as well as "week-end warriors" (pick-up trucks pulling their boats) hauling ### about 70 mph in the fast lane and NOT getting pulled over. Of course, since all the COPS are at the donut shop and the CHP guys are patrolling the surface streets, they get away with it. On the subject of the CHP in Ca. why do they patrol areas that are already covered by the local city cops and Sheriff's deputys ? And why, pray tell, do they appear on local TV stations doing traffic reports during the 6 o'clock news ? Ca. is soooooo broke, yet they can pay an on-duty CHP officer to appear on the 6 o'clock news giving traffic reports along with the regular news person.

    It's California!
Only place I've been where no one can make a left turn without cutting off the corner. Think with all the freeways they forgot how to turn the steering wheel! After almost getting the front end of my Jeep wiped off a few times, I learned to stop way back of the crosswalk at traffic lights!

Those officers you see on most of the news programs doing traffic are not on duty. They are paid by the station, but are allowed to wear their uniforms on camera.

Just an update....Got my letter from the state of CA. Ticket is $238, and I'm just going to pay it. They saw the mistake and sent it back to the officer to be corrected. Honestly don't see it being worth me fighting it. Yeah it may not go on my record, but how much more would a lawyer and the ticket they change it to cost? All to keep the few points I may get off my record. But my company didn't seem to even think it was a big deal, and should I so happen to go somewhere else(I don't plan to, I love my job where I am), I doubt, driving in the left lane is gonna be looked at as a job deciding ticket.

It will go your driving record. It was a moving violation. If you don't want to hire a traffic attorney, your other options would be either travel back ot Cali and go to court and explain in your own defense, the other would be to write to them in a legal letter. I would at least try to fight for it not to go to your driving record and pay the fine. In some instances, they will reduce the fine. Remember, your driving previleges are PRICELESS........

just take it as a lesson. don't really matter what state your in. stay out of the hammer lane.

plain and simple. cuz most states don't allow it.

here in utah. your ok. but once you're in the major population. your not allowed. and in the capitol city. your barred from TWO left lanes.
