Kinda agree with Healthy about trucking being what you can make of it.

Why whine about union when you can hire onto a non-union outfit?
Why whine about non-union when you can go union?
Why whine about equipment when you can buy your own?

...and why whine about pay and conditions when you can start your OWN company and thus call the shots?

If you don't like trucking, why not get a job in another field? There are lumping outfits around here that pay almost as much as some trucking companies, and they spend their nights at home.

There's not a #### thing wrong with a positive attitude. Try it; you'll like it. The industry as a whole is full of negativists and contrarians. And that, to me, is a great deal of what's wrong with the industry.

Why would one start a company in a market glutted up with "New Canadians" who are only too happy to always undercut no matter how low you go? And more coming in by the day? (At least around here.)

I don't see why this is so hard for some to grasp.

(I mean really, people, this is not like you're to solve differential equations in your head --that was supposed to be my new post-trucking job! :biggrin_25525:)

Good trucking companies? Their really aren't any I know of. Find the national avg turnover rate and that'll give you an idea of "good" companies to work. They're all revolving doors looking for a place to happen. The government needs to get involved in a big way. First u have to remove the criminals and the tax dodgers. That'll shut down most common carriers overnight.
So they won't do anything, carry on good attitude seekers and keep your heads down and your pencil necks sharp.

Have heard some good things about B&D Walters out of Lethbridge.
I am hoping they are true since I start there next week.

If you're a truck driver, don't buy a truck. If you're a business man and you've run the numbers and found a niche area thats underserved, then by all means, go into the trucking business. But if you do go into the trucking business, buy ten trucks not one. In trucking, economies of scale matter. Ten trucks will get you better prices (per unit) on all the things you need. Anyone planning on buying a truck, leasing onto a company and hauling general freight or reefer is likely to have a tough road ahead. Basically buying a job, and not a particularly good paying job either. The "New Canadians" are no different than their predecessors from Ireland or Eastern Europe. They come here looking for something better than what they experienced back home, when they arrive they find the streets aren't paved with gold and they aren't qualified for any good paying job so they take the best thing they can find. Sucks for the rest of us. If you want to remain in the business and make a decent wage you need to specialize in an area that 1) requires skills besides driving. 2) has a strong union 3) requires communication skills and the ability to make decisions that newcomers don't possess.

The worst companies out there seem to be picking up Europeans instead of changing the behaviour that keeps them short of employing skilled Canadians.

I have no qualms with the Europeans, but issues with the government for giving the cheapest lot of companies an incentive to continue cutting Canadian wages and employment opportunities.

H&R, Westcan, you know what you do, to name only two.

Hey I so totally agree with Tam Tam. These New Canadians aren't bad and are trying to make a living like us all. Unfortunately it only leads to an almost unlivible industry because nobody in control has to change or pay more. These New Canadians don't need to worry about fines because eventually in five or ten years, In their country they will be able to own their home. Their prices to live are lower than ours by far.
