Hi ya'll,
I'm currently a student at a truck driving school in Knoxville,Tennessee. I'll be graduating in a little over a week.
I was planning on going to work for Werner for three reasons:
1) I can get my G.I. Bill money through their apprenticeship program.
2) I was told that my brother, who has been a driver for 13 years, would be able to give me my finishing training, and afterwards, we could drive as a team.
3) We could take his little dog on the truck with us.
Here's the deal though:
One of my instructor's former students had been driving for Werner for almost a year, but the other day was told to dead head to the Dallas terminal, after dropping and hooking at his shippee's place near Ft. Worth.
Once he got to the Dallas terminal, he was told to eat, shower, etc., and afterwards, clean out his truck.
Being told to clean out his truck didn't raise any suspicions b/c recently he had put in a request for a truck that was better than the almost 3 year old "ant-eater" he was driving.
Later, he was told to go into the terminal's main conference room, to wait for a meeting that alot of other drivers were included in as well.
Once it started, the guy speaking at the meeting pretty much cut to the chase. They were all being laid off, due to "company cutbacks", and that "you all are only part of 500 drivers being let go."
They then made him sign a rider waiver, and put him on a truck that a still employed regional driver was going back to the Atlanta hub in. He did it b/c that's where his personal vehicle is, and it beats the hell out of a Greyhound bus.
Has anybody else heard or know anything about Werner doing this? Thanks in advanced for any info you can provide.

When did this happen? With the Mall shooting going on in Omaha, I can't find anything in the news about it, but that doesn't mean that it isn't true.
-
According to my instructor, it happened last week......I'm going to call one of their recruiters and ask them about it, but you know how much their words are worth.
-
I can not find any info on this either. There may have been another reason he was let go and the facts might have been destorted so as not to look bad. I think news like this would have been all over this board if it was so.

Multiple Google searches didn't turn up any thing.

This has been going on for a few weeks now. I was driving for them. I had to have Surgury i was out for 2 weeks when i was ready to back to work. I called my dispatcher and they told me i cant go back to my dedicated account. The dumb reason that they gave me was they didnt like where i lived, and it was hard to get me home. I lived at the same place as when i started. I then called driver placement and they told me they have no positions available. so now im starting with a small local company on monday. So stay away from werner unless you wanted to be treated like a number.
And this has nothing to due with my performance. I had a 98% on time percentage. No at fault accidents. -
This would explain a lot in my situation. 2 months ago I was going to start with Werner. Everything was working out fine. I was coming out of school. Completed the application process, background, drug test, etc you know the drill. I was even given a date to report for oreintation and I was told I would go out with a trainer. The day before I was going to leave for oreintation, I got a letter in the mail. It stated I would no longer qualify for employment. I was shocked!!! I immediatly called up the recruiter. He said " I no longer qualify", and would not give me a reason why. Now I know I have a clean background, no accidents, tickets, and I was the highest in my class. I scored 99.8% on my final exam something I am very proud of. Why 99.8%, and not 100% hell if I know, but I am proud. But I was disapointed, what if I didn't check the mail that day? Why didn't he just call me? He hassled the hell out of me when he wanted me to sign on. I wonder if this situation had anything to do with my issue. You never know, but if it did that would explain a lot.

"Unfortunately, we're going to see significant bankruptcies, particularly among small carriers going into next year," Kuntz said. He also noted that rail is also experiencing a decline in tonnage and it can be expected to put downward pressure on freight rates.
Kuntz said he's encouraged by comments by some major carriers that they would reduce their fleet size before accepting cheap freight. Major player Werner Enterprises said it would cut back its fleet by 500 trucks and Swift recently said it would reduce its truck count by up to 1,000, Kuntz said.

How in heck could you no longer qualify? Are they so slimey they won't even tell you the REAL reason (i.e., not hiring right now)? How annoying! At least you're still fresh out of school and surely have many other places to go - I hope you get on with someone soon. They like you to do your training ASAP after you finish school, from what I hear

Red Raider, one thing doesn't make sense with your situation. Why wouldn't you just ask your brother? Instead of posting it in the forum? It seems to me that he would have to know someone that has been affected by this "layoff". I mean he would have to hear talk while at a yard or something. I know my situation was strange (in the previous post) and this would probly explain it. But at the same time, after I thought about it for a second, it seems a little odd that your brother doesn't know anything, or you not asking your brother. Just a thought, if I am wrong let me know. Good luck to you.
