What IS the problem? You said you have had 18 Trucking jobs in 24 years. You KNOW how to get a job. You just don't know how to STAY with one.

GED? Child's play. As Gman said, take the test.If you flunk take it again. We're not talking years here. Are we? :) I took and passed my GED in 1976 cause even then everyone said I had to have it. In the 36 year interim;I have not been asked to show it once.:biggrin_25511:

I have never in all my years of working even been asked to see my diploma I couldn't tell you if I still have it.....sounds to me it's just someone that wants to pull you chain after you go get your GED then they give you that job at bull Chet wages but you will stay with it just like you did with CRST. Just move on.....

yeah, But job hopping is still job hopping and the OP has shown with his own record and admission that he has no problem with it....and any DECENT perspective employer who sees that will think twice before investing time and money in a driver that won't stay. Hard to get your career started when you have a "history" of hopping from place to place...at least with a good company.

Have you checked with any of those 18 trucking companies where you worked before? They hired you once. Unless you left with hard feelings I would expect you could find at least one of them that would rehire you.

I would not worry about the company that turned you down, if you look for a job for any length of time you are going to see a pattern. Some companies have a list of things that they require, other companies have a list of things that don't mention half of the things that the other company listed. IMHO when you find a company that is indeed looking for a driver, (because many are just kicking tires anyway, not really hiring, but singing the politically correct tune), if you will walk in in person in a professional manner, without the plumbers butt, or your belly hanging out, without offensive writing on your T shirt, but looking like a professional, you will have a chance to sell yourself as a driver, you might walk away with job. As a poster said in another thread, there are another 450,000 carriers that you can check with, don't get discouraged, just go to the next one and don't look back. I also forgot to mention attitude, polish it up a little bit before you walk in the door, and one last thought, leave the foul language outside when you walk in the door also, your first appearance is very important. You can find a job, just hang in there and keep looking.

I took my GED, right after I dropped out to work, and some people had problems (particularly the people who had been out of school) but it was actually really easy for me, I got advanced scores on everything but math, and I left in the 10th grade (sophomore).

In the state I lived in at the time, you only had to retake the parts of the test you failed. There were tons of people redoing history, especially the older people, mainly because it is all memorization that you never really use in adult life. The math was easy stuff but I barely passed it, because I am terrible at math, and the test is timed.

The English essay portion was fun, but we didn't get to pick our own topic, so be prepared to get a vague random topic, mine was how has technology impacted your life, and since I took the test in 2004 I wrote a scathing essay on how cell phones have made a profound negative impact on me and society around me, and that got a perfect score, so either the grader agreed with me or they aren't judging too harshly.

So I say go get your ged, just study the tests you fail, if you fail any at all. Most trucking companies require you have it or a diploma nowadays, and it is cheap too.

One thing that I forgot to clarify, "my fault but did not feel bad about it", this attitude needs repaired in pretty short order, this falls under the heading of polishing your attitude that I mentioned earlier. You just cost the company a thousand bucks most likely, and you did not feel bad about it, this will bring you more disappointments in not finding a job than the diploma issue ever will, depending how bad this is, it may prevent you from finding anyone that would give you the time of day, there is NO excuse for this.

It depends on the States requirements for obtaining a GED. In Indiana you are not allowed to take the test without taking the courses to obtain your certificate to take the test. Now I found that Ivy Tech does an online training that lasts for about 6 weeks, and it was only $100 to do the course. Hubby then could schedule to go in and get his GED. Unfortunately he never did, so when ever he feels out an application he lists it as a high school graduate. Companies do not call your high school to find out if you graduated, nor do they say bring in your high school diploma. Some companies frown on the fact if you have no GED or high school diploma, and that is why they require to have either one. Now I am not telling you to do what my husband does, but the majority of companies don't even check if you have it listed.

Umm, this won't always work as they want verification at least normally of what state ed office holds your records. I kinda side with the other poster, the GED requirements are really minimal, there are probably online practice exams, get it done, get working, feel better.
