I'm new to trucking and I wanted to get some input from anyone who might have some experience with Texas trucking schools. I'm in the process of finding a trucking school to attend and want to make sure I pick a good school. I would like to stay in south texas but am willing to travel to other locations (even another state if necessary) for the training in order to attend a good school that reputable companies will hire from. I plan to pay up front to avoid being committed to any particular company. Anyone input would be greatly appreciated. I am trying to avoid any costly mistakes from my inexperience and lack of knowledge. Thanks in advance.

    TDDS Technical Institute

There are many other good schools. Ask which companies recruit from the school.

    Hey egander1,

I am about to take my driving test for my Class A CDL this Thursday. I am attending Sage Technical Institute which is affiliated with St. Philips College here in San Antonio. Its a 4-5 week course, the first 2 weeks are classroom going over a classroom trucking book and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations Pocketbook (the truckers bible). The first 2 weeks were very informative to me since I had no prior experience, the next 2-3 weeks were great in that I had 1 on 1 driving (student/teacher). I have driven 5 different types of trucks and have great knowledge on what the upcoming DPS test has instore for me. They had 4 different recruiters come by from hiring companies, there are many Eagle Ford Shale companies that have their contact information there but I have not contacted them since I am more interested in Over the Road. I hope this helps.

Good advice there...Some community colleges have a trucking school. You usually get better training with them.

I a newb on this forum, so hello to all!! : )
Sage in San Antonio is around $4300 for their program.
I've been checking some options since I live in Austin.
Austin Community College has a partnered program with International Schools-Professional Driver Training. They work with Trucking Companies for a "pre-hire" scenario ... which means ... if all goes well and you get your CDL-A, then that company will take you on, and do their company training/hiring from that point. So if you can jump through all the company hoops for hiring, then you have yourself a job, and some have tuition reimbursement programs. ACC tuition is $3660 and it is a 200 hr. course that takes 4 wks. They have one starting on the 19th and I think I going to take it! I have a booklet with info. if you want more info.

    ATX and egander1 Thank this.

I just made it through the FFE Driver Academy in Fort Worth.
It is a fast paced 18 program. After the school is over you go out for six weeks making $455 a week and then when you get your own truck you start out at .29c and get a raise every year. Great training program, they will teach you if you want to learn, but they have higher standards than the DPS. I leave out to go on the road in the morning.

Thanks for the info, I have family in Austin and this could be a possibility for me as well. Please let me know if you go the Austin community college route and what you think of it.
