Kick the trans into neutral as you roll up to the light, keep your your left foot on the brake so you can play with the accelerator and rev up the engine while you're waiting. Then when the light is about ready to change, cram it into gear (Make sure you grind those gears a little). If this don't work maybe you should request an automatic.

Yeah grind those gears

personaly i will downshift to 2nd clutch in then come to a complete stop. then leave it in gear. saves wear on the clutch break. if its a really long light i will take it out of gear to save wear on my leg.

If you're still with your trainer, do what he says, then when you get 'your own' truck, do what works for you.

I leave mine in gear

I usually try to roll up to the stop light whenever possible, and just rev up and toss it in gear without even using clutch..
Tho, most times the slow ######## in front of me force me to come to a complete stop anyways... -
