DO PRIME TRUCKS HAVE GPSs IN THEM OR DO YOU HAVE TO GET ONE YOURSELF? HOW RELIABLE ARE THEY FOR DIRECTIONS FOR BIG TRUCKS?

I use CoPilot Live, non truck edition, ($7.99 on Google Play or $12.99 on the Apple App Store) on my tablet and set it to the RV setting. It is usually spot on, but I have to use common sense and pay attention to my surroundings (ie. read the signs).
I could buy three tablets for what you'll spend for a truck GPS and you can't play music, movies, games or surf the net on a truck GPS...waste of money if ya ask me. I use my common sense and haven't gotten myself into trouble yet with my low cost alternative.
Google Earth is your friend too. But, above all, pay attention to the signs and use the map, electronics fail all the time.

Just wondering ... why would you use the non-truck edition as opposed to the truck edition that appears tailored for big trucks? -
Truck edition, $150.... RV, $7 or so.

Non truck platforms are OS so you can use free or very inexpensive nav to get to where you want to go, not "take a left here" when its a 5 story brick building to the left with no entrance unless you decide the truck can remodel the building. You can also have 3D maps of any area you travel to most often with Google Earth and Google Maps which will show THERE IS A FRICKIN' 5 STORY BRICK BUILDING TO YOUR LEFT.
There are also quite a few cities where DOT has full out street maps & cams with real time feed of road construction/closures, traffic at a dead halt (can you say "idle fun"? didn't think so) and the best re-routes with estimated travel time. Those are free to download and save you a ton of time playing in traffic. Non truck edition won't let you get those apps unless you know how to override the SD card... which you aren't supposed to do.
(The reason I'm stuck on a brick building to my left is the day my parents needed me to drive them into Portland and Dad had his older truck GPS running. It wanted me to take a left into a brick building. When I did take a left *past* the building I threw the stupid thing out the window. He glared for a moment then realized - my daughter drives *everywhere* and has driven *everything* since she was 6 years old...and never driven into a brick building.)OtatKen Thanks this. -

copilot is the best. nothing can compare.
i've had absolutely no qualms relying on it. but like every gps. it isn't perfect. but it's as close as your gonna get. and i've tried them all.
copilot will get you there. WITHOUT screwing around. and in a practical matter. which is more then i can say for the other brands.
it'll take you on streets where trucks are allowed. it won't route you on streets that trucks AREN'T ALLOWED.
try using rand to get from vegas to phoenix. it routes through flagstaff. and screams when you take us 93. then routes you into prescott into a neighborhood and can't find it's way out. that's just one example.
i bought the truck edition copilot. tried it on my pnone for 2 months. then bought the actual handheld unit.
as for all the bells and whistles everyone wants in there gps. there's an app for that. for FREE.
like otaken says. why spend money for a handheld unit that does absolutely nothing but guide you. when you can buy a FREE phone and do a whole lot more. (phone calls, internet, text, gps, music, movies, etc. etc. )
i won't buy an ipod when my phone can do the same thing. and so much more.
i won't buy an iphone. when i can get a FREE android with much better specs, works better, and a bigger screen.
i will say this though. for those times when copilot DOES decide to smoke crack. google nav which is free has ALWAYS come to the rescue.
in other words. don't just rely on one gps. -
I have a truck edition gps.It always tries to get me to go under that low bridge just north of indianapolis. It has told me to turn onto restricted roads.I use mine as the best was to get to city to city but call customer to get route in the city.I stay out of trouble that way
