My brother will not shut his trucks down, He owns 11 and has a few more leased on to him. He hauls directly for a company. He loves them, they love him and pay him well. He will not shut his operation down because others are making bad decisions or running in the red. That would be foolish of him to piss his customers off.

But they are doing it in Italy

    http://www.gulf-times.com/site/topi...=189295&version=1&template_id=39&parent_id=21

ROME: Italian truck drivers started a five-day strike yesterday in protest at high fuel prices, bringing chaos to major cities and huge jams at frontiers with neighbouring countries.
Some drivers blocked roads with their lorries, while others formed convoys that deliberately slowed traffic on major highways. It is the second major strike in the transport sector in the past two weeks.
Paolo Ugge, head of the FAI, the biggest drivers’ union, said about 90% of members had followed the strike call. “The response has been very strong,” he told AFP.
Seven unions, representing about 80% of drivers working for the estimated 100,000 transport companies, called the strike to protest fuel prices and deregulation in the sector.
There were long tailbacks on roads into Rome, Milan, Bologna, Naples, Genoa and other cities.
Barricades of trucks restricted cars to a single lane on many major highways and completely blocked others.
At Ventimiglia, on the Italy-France coastal border, the strikers stopped any trucks from crossing the frontier. There was a tailback of more than 10km of lorries on the French side.
Already on Sunday dozens of Italian lorry drivers blocked the Frejus tunnel linking the two countries through the Alps mountains.
The drivers – staging their first major strike since 1990 – are demanding government help and union leaders are to meet Italian Transport Minister Alessandro Bianchi today.
About 70% of Italy’s merchandise is moved by road, according to La Stampa daily, which estimated that the current five-day strike would cost about 5bn euros ($7.3bn).
Italy’s largest transport strike in 25 years caused widespread chaos on November 30, with hundreds of flights cancelled and trains, buses, ferries, emergency services and even hearses out of action.
Tens of thousands of transport workers took part in the action in protest at what they say is insufficient money for transport in centre-left Prime Minister Romano Prodi’s 2008 budget.
Prodi’s belt-tightening budget aims to cut Italy’s budget deficit to 2.2% of gross domestic product (GDP) next year, from 2.4% this year, in line with European rules.
But unions say there is not enough money for transport. They also want the government to make a stronger commitment to state airline Alitalia, which has been losing money for more than a decade, and to the national rail company. – AFP

The key phrase in the post before this one is "7 unions representing 80% of the drivers". If you could get 80% of the drivers here to do that you would be in business. But you wouldn't even be able to get 8% here to strike. Even if all the Teamsters in this country went on strike, all the truck load carriers would be lined up to haul the freight. I remember one time during the 80's when all the strike talk was going on, about 10 trucks got together on I 71 between Cleveland and Columbus and ran side by side at 45mph. I wasn't one of the striking trucks but I was in the traffic jam behind them. All that them guys proved was how to get a ticket for impeding traffic. The cops didn't care about their greivances, and none of the news services picked up on it.

Taking a vacation at home or an honest vacation will be far more effective than blocking traffic.

Let me enlighten you as to who she/he is.

#1 She/he is nothing more that a troll. Using truck drivers and the forums they hang out in to promote a "myspace" hit counter and a low ranked "myspace" band.

#2 Her/His claims of being all over XM radio are complete bulls***. I listen to XM every waking hour...up to 16 hours a day. I have 21 presets that scan between all news and talk stations. There has not been ONE mention of this so-called strike.

#3 I do believe there have been promotions on XM regarding "The Road Hammers". I've never heard one.

#4 My daughter and wife (both avid country fans) listen to GMT and CMT for an unbelievable amount of time each day, neither have heard of this band. That doesn't mean they haven't had air time though.

#5 I believe this is a cheap attempt to get the above groups music promoted and heard. By themselves, their label, or some groupie.

I could be wrong. But I doubt it.

Nice posts here. Just wanted to say that back in '93-'94 some time, we all tried to strike. At that time I was working for a smaller company and they put it plan and simple if we shut the truck off for 3 days, we will be fired. The company ran approx 500 trucks, and most of us did shut down. There was alot of drivers that did try to shut down during that time, but there was no organization.

There is no way that I will strike/shut down unless there is an organization behind it. Shutting down to strike will not do anything, because you will only have approx 10-20% of company drivers that will actually do it.

The way I see it is based on a business tactic; supply and demand. It all comes down to every company loosing money due to the high fuel prices. Well, then run your truck slower, and save a little here and there. The faster your vehicle goes, the more fuel you will burn. Stop the "unneccessary" idling. Someone has to pay for it, so the consumer prices go up, and then freight charges go lower, just to make up that difference that you burn.

Also, hypathetically, if we do all strike, who does the government go to talk to, to work things out. We have no one that is worth it right now that I would stand behind to work the issues/problems out.

What it boils down to is that as drivers, there is no way that the government will listen to us, it would have to be a grouping of all the major and minor companies to start a commitee and take it to the floor.

Sorry, I don't see a strike doing anything but putting alot of small business' out of business.
