I have a question to ask experienced drivers and appreciate/thank all responses. I have been looking for something exciting to do for a living for a long time and now wondering if truck driving might be a good a endeavor for me. I am now in my late 20's and have had many jobs (mechanic, construction, maintenance, sales). I have come to the conclusion that I can not stand routine. I looking for a profession that will offer me adventure. I don't mind hard work and love driving the open road. Is trucking driving a good path for me? I don't have much as far family and friends, so loneliness in not a problem for me. I guess my question is, if there is excitment to be had in between driving and delievery hours? Again, thanks for the responses.

Skydiving is adventurous, trucking, eh not so much. There is a great deal of routine in trucking just like anything else, but the view from the office window changes minute to minute, and on some days is quite spectacular.
TRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -
you do get to see then country....but routine abounds. day in day out, sit in the same chair and look at the same white and yellow lines....not just like anything else. you wake up and there you are, at work. spend the vast majority of your time in a little metal box on wheels. dont get me wrong, i like driving, but if your looking to get away from routine, you will be jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

Yeah, believe me, all truck stop showers are identical as are fuel lanes. Shippers/consignees dock too. The scenery will vary however. I say go for it.

1. Showers
Each major chain has similar showers to one another, but they are each different from the competition.
TA showers give you 2 large towels and a real cloth floor mat. They also have the best shower heads.
Pilot/Flying J only give you 1 towel, and most often a paper floor mat.
Love's are most similar to Pilot and Flying J, but generally a bit of a step down.
Mom-n-pops are another story altogther. Never know what you'll get, or how clean they will be.
Probably the best shower rooms are the Little America's. They each have a nice large bathtub as well. Well worth the $10.
2. Docks
They vary even more than showers.
Some have about 2 feet between trailers, some more like 10.
Some are not designed for a 53' trailer and a sleeper cab, more like a 30' with a day cab.
Some, like the one I delivered to last week in Laredo, require that you blind-side it in.
Some go down into a tunnel.
One dock I experienced had, literally, 1 inch clearance on each side to clear the mirrors. (I very slightly scraped one mirror housing as I was pulling out)
3. Fuel lanes
They vary as well.
Some are straight, some are angled.
Some have room to pull up, some don't.
Some are so tight (like the Pilot in Roanoke) you'll be lucky to get in or out without scraping something.
You may have days that are much like the previous week, but nothing stays the same in the overall scheme of things for very long.48Packard Thanks this. -
