Let's say you drive 3,000 miles in one week. Assume an average of 50mph. That's 60 hours, not counting stops.

    You get paid .36cpm. That's $1080.00 Now $1080./60 = $18.00 per hour.

That's not bad in my book.

At an average of 45MPH it's 66.66 hours. That $16.xx/hr.

    Correct me if I'm wrong.

Everything is relative. Coming out of a 40 hr week job @ $8.00, this will indeed seem like you've hit gold in terms of gross pay. You need to also add in the other hours you are having to log on duty withOUT pay. Also, the aforementioned 3,000 mile week is going to considered an exceptional week and unless you're in a long-haul operation where the length of haul averages more than about 1,500 miles, 3000 mile weeks are very difficult to do consistently. And to add to that, the less miles you do in future weeks, often the more UNpaid on-duty time you have to log.

Also, what does it cost for the time missed seeing your kids grow up? The potential divorce? The difficulty having a meaningful relationship with someone? The inability to plan hometime events weeks in advance? The poor eating habits and possibly poorer overall health that driving often leads to? The health insurance? (truckers are considered one of the highest cost occupation groups by health insurers and as such have higher premiums) Also, truck driver is considered a high risk job making life insurance also more expensive.

... Just some other things for the new wannabe driver to consider.

I agree. If you've kept good records of that, why don't you post your calculations for all of our benefit? I would like to see.

And no, I don't count when someone else is unloading/loading the truck.

More like $6.40 hr as you are living in your truck 24/7.Minus an average of $150. a week in personal expense that drops to about $5.50 hr.And that is on a good week.Bad weeks your looking at the $3 to $4 hr range.

    YOUR RICH!!!!!!

Why do so many truck drivers who have been doing this for yrs, come down on this profession like it's the worst job in the world. If it is so bad why have you guys done it for so long????

I'm paid by the hour. I get paid for
    Loading
    Unloading
    Pre Trip
    Post trip
    Fueling
And more that I can't think of!
I get $25 per diem for EVERY night I spend in the truck and when I get a room my employer pays for it plus my per diem.

You should count loading/unloading time>it's YOUR time and you're NOT getting paid for it.

Nobody is saying it is the worst job in the world, only stating true facts that others who want to start may not know. You know, what it is really like,NOT what the recruiter tells you.

I'm not down on it but when I see someone going in with what appears to perhaps be unrealistic and untruthful expectations, I'd be an a-$-$ for not speaking up. For many of us, driving is a great job, warts and all. But for others, it's our job and we do it because we're "stuck with it", particularly in this poor job market and we happen to be pretty good at it, and someone else appreciates our performance level, reliability, talents, safety record, etc and try and keep us happy and making them money as well.
