I have a habit of speaking to drivers and o/o when they are in our docks waiting to be loaded or unloaded.. one guy took me by surprise when he told me he has 1.4 mil miles on his truck and no overhaul yet, the truck was strong as when he bought it, and that he might do and overhaul it in the middle of 2014.

I did not asked (Idk why it did not pop in my head at the time) how was it possible, he just told me "he takes care of his truck from day one", did oil change more often then one is suppose to, ignition and part maintainance before needed, and never beats his engine with fast acceleration. He t

    He had a 07 Kenworth t800 with a Cat 575hp

I was just wondering if its even possible or he was just messing with me?

I bought a used truck with 90k miles, if it was "beaten" engine wise and not taken care property am I to late to max out the miles on my truck?

What are things to keep your ruck like that?

Oil change EVERY 10K miles with 2 gallons Lucas and rest Rotella. I had 2 customers in my shop do this...one Cat, one Detroit. Both went 1.3 mil and never had the pan off. Ran overhead every 100K and waterpump...thats it. When overhaul came, inside looked like new on both. Bearings were like new, cylinders showed hatch marks.

Seen plenty of trucks make this mark and more. Lot of n-14 and 11.1 and 12.7 detroits (especially the three oil filter ones). some old 3406B as well.

Some times you get a good one.

He was probably pulling your leg just a little bit. Do the math. a 2007 truck, even if he got in Jan. 2006, that would be 7 years old this Jan. So he is doing 200,000 miles a year? Thats about 550 miles a day, EVERY DAY for 7 years. Yes, it is possible, but very doubtful.

Back on topic, preventative maintenance and keeping a very close eye on things along with 10,000 mile oil changes and routine overhead adjustments will surely make for a long life.

Clearly he used a pallet jack to raise the wheels so the truck could idle with out shutting down, hence the high mileage.

I have seen many an engine get a million miles without an overhaul, we had a customer with a cab-over Peterbilt and a 12.7 that had 1.4 million and he took it to Detroit for a dyno run they changed the air compressor, and turbo, and offered him a warrenty, he got over 2 million went he sold it to a farmer, he ran I 5 Vancouver to LA. He did his maintenance, at 12,000 miles and greased it when he was at the dock waiting. A drop and go oil change was extremely cheap, from memory it was $50.00 plus the filters he kept it clean, washed every time it came home.
We did bearing roll ins at 200,000 miles the first time and 300,000 after that.
I spent my life working on engines and am a firm believer, that an oil change is the cheapest overhaul you will not need. Adding a few quarts of ATF Dex 3, 1/2 hour, or 20 miles before you change the oil, keeps it extremely clean, I got customers to add a gallon of ATF before they brought it in to do bearing roll ins. Clean is great.
Keeping the overhead adjustment, on a schedule of 100,000 miles, saves you fuel and keeping the truck and components clean saves you a phenomenal amount of money and down time.
The very best for longevity were the Series 60 and the N14, if Nalcool coolant was used and maintained, now it is called Dex-cool or power cool now.
    Just a thought!

I have a detroit 12.7 apart 1.4 millon he used elc coolant all its life and changed oil at 10,000. The liners have no cavitation at all. It burned 2 gallons of oil between oil changes. I am going to put pics up tomorrow of the outside of the liners. I have only seen this one other time and it used elc also it works. The rod bearings are not even showing brass color yet, unreal I have never seen that must be the lucas.
