I am cureently with landstar on the van side and they are making get eobr. I am really pissed beacuse I had a wrong date on a road side inspection since Jan 2010 thats it. They are using skyblitz to say you have log violations. I have to eat the cost of the eobr and pay the monitoring fee monthly. I have been an owner operator since 2001 and this clearly has me thinking of moving on because I have to incur a cost for this because they have let their csa score at inway get out of control. Would you stay or move on after the holidays ? I am thinking about applying to mercer on the van side. Has anybody been leased to them pulling vans or currently with them? I am only willing to go some where on percentage. Any ideas? nhramember

Personally if a Company enforces EOBRs that are not a requirement then they should lose their business. I would not lease to any company that forced EOBRs. Plenty of better company's to pull for so take your business to someone who respects you.

I think it would depend on your operation, personally. If you have a core group of agents, and do well here (I hope after a decade+), I'd do one of two things. If you do mostly drop and hook, and your operation will be minimally affected by an EOBR, I'd just go ahead and get one. If you do a lot of live load/unload, I'd inquire with your agents about using you as an outside carrier. If most or all of them will, buy or lease a trailer, get your authority, and run the way you want to. There's more paperwork and compliance issues that way, but it's not a big deal really.
I've heard a lot of crying about Mercer and their van division. In fact if I was going to pull van, I'd probably try to get on with Schneider's choice program as you choose your own loads online. EOBR though, so I doubt you'll gain much.
In the end, EOBR's are the future. The feds mandating bad carriers use them in the beginning started the snowball, and even though that was thrown out in court, they are in place, making otherwise good carriers in their peer group look bad. Everyone will have them in ten years, it is a given.

They will give you the MCP50 at no charge and there are no holes drilled into the truck. The mopnthly fee is around 24 bucks. If you cant afford that at LS then you shouldnt be here. EOBR are there because of the drivers who have no clue to do a logbook legally and compress and cheat. EOBR keeps the legal drivers legal. I get more time in and make more with the EOBR. But as to your question, Id leave. EOBR makes it easier for our logging, you wont see it until you try it. Stop believing the whining from all the paper loggers. Im willing to bet most of them compress and run off the books and thats the reason EOBR are out in the first place.

Actually you're wrong. Most of our log violations are form and manner violations, not cheating on logbooks. Forget to put a trip number, violation! Forget to total up your hours yesterday, violation! You can call safety yourself and ask about it.
Also, if LS requires you to get an EOBR, you have to buy the unit for $600. The freebie program is only for voluntary BCO's.

So is it a matter of being fatigued and missing the details that you should be doing repetively day in and day out since you began driving a truck? The EOBR will help those who use it to its potential. If we are going to EOBR in the near future, it would suggest to be a volunteer and get it free than to have to pay for it after having "minor" Form and Manner errors that could have been avoided.

It boils down to being alert, aware and attentive to the paperwork.
