You need to provide your own CB.

Since no one talks on them anymore, and you will only use it at shippers and receivers, I would not recommend spending a bunch on one. I think the one I bought was 35 bucks lol.

I really do apologize for the long-winded post here I've made. Just trying to run some numbers and double check some assumptions I'm making.

I've read that TnT can last anywhere from 6 to 8 weeks, to as much as three months, extending longer if trainee/trainer/Prime feel it necessary. I think the time with the trainer will be invaluable and I'm not questioning the length of time, I'm looking forward to learning alot during this time.

My question pertains to pay structure during the time when the trainee looses their guarantee of $600 due to home time (HT).

If I understand correctly, trainees during the TnT phase are paid .12 cpm for miles driven during days they are available for dispatch even when these days fall in a pay period that some HT has been taken. As I understand it, the pay period ends/begins every Tuesday at 1400 EST. It would seem that taking home time just prior to the pay period end and then extending into the next weekly pay period could end up costing more income than if the HT was taken within the weekly pay period, not extending into two of them. Therefore it should be avoided at all costs from the trainee's perspective. I'm not concerned about taking home time, I'm just trying to figure out how I will be paid when HT is taken or required to be taken because trainer wishes to go home. In the future, when I am assigned a trainer, I want to try and be informed about this type of issue that could arise and to be able to discuss it with him intelligently so hopefully we can come to agreeable terms.

    Example:

Trainer n Trainee take the below days off for Home Time:

    Sunday HT
    Monday HT
    Tuesday HT
    Wednesday HT

Taking into account ongoing weekly paybacks for $25 (money from the $200 draw) and $55 (CPAP test/machine) the below net income scenario would/could occur.

    Week 1 minus guarantee.
Trainee is paid .12 cpm with no guaranteed $600/wk pay.
    2000 team miles @ .12 cpm = $240 * .75 (fed/state tax rate) - $80 (draw/cpap) = $100 net income for the week.

    Week 2 minus guarantee.
Trainee is paid .12 cpm with no guranteed $600/wk pay.
    2000 team miles @ .12 cpm = $240 * .75 - $80 = $100 net income for the week

The trainee could earn $200 net in two weeks for driving 4000* team miles.

Guaranteed $600 gross weekly income for two weeks:
    $1200 * .75 - $160 = $740 net income after deductions (Fed/State, draw, CPAP).

    $740 - $200 = -$540 difference over two weeks

Could you guys help me correct any assumptions that may or may not be way off, especially in the estimated team miles that may occur in the above scenario. What follows is how I derived the estimated team miles mentioned above I've read where some teams run and average 7500 mpw so I will pull back on that and assume 6500 trying to assume a fair, reasonable figure if that is possible given all the assumptions and variables. This would be 1071 miles per team, per day, or roughly 500 miles per individual per day which on average could be high, I'm not really sure to be honest.

    6500m/7days = 930m
    930m * .12 cpm = $111

    1071 * 3 = 3213 per week

*Assumes 4000 team miles in two weeks where both trainer and trainee have taken 4 days HT for a 14 day, two week pay period.

    Thanks alot,

    Bill

Bill you are knee deep into this and WAAAY too early to worry about it. This will not occur till after you get your license. A quick sum up, You get paid the 600 or 12 cents when you are available for dispatch whether your trainer is available or not. If you go home, = no pay for those days. The 600 guarantee is based on a 5000 mile week, You most likely will be well over that every week for your training period, Mine averaged 7000 miles per week, yours may be different. AT A MINIMUM, when you are available for dispatch you WILL get the $600.00 per week. Training is not based on time but accumulated mileage, You get credited for 10k miles for your student driving after you pass you exam, then with the trainer for an additional 30k miles, usually takes around two months or so. Then you upgrade and get your own truck.

A critical question, if I'm accepted by Prime...

How can I ensure that I'll be assigned a good trainer? I don't know anyone there and complaints about trainers abound on this forum.

if the team does 7000 miles the trainee gets 12 cpm per mile for the whole 7000. WELL above the 600.00 guarantee

Roger that. I was talking with the wife earlier and she asked me, "How much will you make in a week when you come home and don't get your guarantee?"

That's when I had to sit down and try to run some numbers/scenarios. Doing that, it popped up that taking home time just before the pay period ends, and extending a couple of days after could reduce the check more than if HT was taken within a one week pay period. I guess this was the crux of what I was trying to figure out in my long-winded post above.
