There is no floor or ceiling, only the market. There are good agents, the there are terrible agents. If you were leased to Roadrunner, you will do fine here. It will take a few months to get an agent base, but you'll do fine surfing the boards till then. It can be rough for someone who's been dispatched on a mileage contract their whole career, but for someone that has found loads for their truck before, LS is gravy.

All the advice these guys are giving is 100% right on as far as you run yourself and find your loads. I know what you are looking for because I was asking the same questions. If you are used to having a set rate at another carrier then % work will take time to grasp after being spoon fed at previous carriers. When you are used to getting $1.00 per mile plus FSC then the math is easy to work out. I have been here 4 months and havent quite found my groove and have struggled and learned along the way. But I have talked to way too many o/ops here that are lifers with Landstar and love it for me to get too frustrated to give up. Its just gonna take some time. but to give you an idea of my last couple of loads

Compton CA to Pittsburgh PA gross rate $3.99 per mile.
so the math works out to
    3.99
    -.47 fsc
    =3.52
    x65%
    =2.288
    +.47 fsc
    =2.758
    x2396 miles
=6608.17 to the truck, give or take a few bucks by the math

load back west that I just dropped yesterday then deadhead home to vegas for a few days for xmas.

    Marion OH to Phoenix AZ

    $2.92 per mile gross
    -.56 fsc
    =2.36
    x65%
    =1.534
    +.56 fsc
    =2.094
    x1954 miles
    =$4091.68 to the truck

I got these loads on a whim and just happened to be in the right place at the right time and they were on the load board.
I have my minimum rate that I look for which is $2 per mile. typical breakdown on $2 is minus the fsc then x65% then add the fsc back on

so say 2.00 -.45=1.55x65%=1.01+.45= 1.46 per mile to the truck. if you have a paid off truck and low overhead you can run $2 loads all day. theyre abundant. and you will make money and take time off whenever you like and go where you want when you want. better loads up to the $2.50 range are very frequent also then beyond $2.75 on up are there also but they will disappear quick so as soon as you see them you gotta call right away.

I have made a few good realtionships with agents now and they even know my name when I talk to them. Be ready to roll with the punches and if you have a snag then call somebody, believe it or not Landstar wants to help and they have some resources avaliable to point you in a positive direction. I never call anybody and complain or whine though, you are representing yourself, and your own business at Landstar, if you burn an agent on a load then you just burned yourself. Always be cordial and professional and have a good appearence at the shippers and customers. I may wear shorts and sweats when I am driving but when I do pickup or drop I am in boots jeans, showered and shaved and ready to work if needed to even load/unload the trailer right along side them

well still waiting. took my drug test at a facility that LS told me to and they didn't have the paperwork for LS drug test, so they had to modify the paperwork they had, mind you I done this on the 21st of Dec. and LS still doesn't have the results. Has this happened to anyone else?
