What exactly am I checking for? (insert crude comment here if so inclined). Is there truck parking? Will they do my laundry? Let me use the shower?

If you pull both brake buttons, it immediately sets the brakes for the tractor and the trailer (as it should). But it also releases the air to the trailer and as the airbags deflate, can cause pressure to build up against the tandem locking pins. The action actually 'shortens' the distance between the two setpoints (tandems and drives). Ever push up against a dock and pull your brakes, only to find the edge of the trailer is now about two inches AWAY from the dock? As the bags deflate, the tandems act as a fulcrum point and sets pressure to push the trailer towards the tractor. Think of it as the tires on the ground staying stationary, but the top of the tandems 'leaning' forward towards the tractor. This creates the same potential energy as a compressed spring.
Now if you release the lock pins of the tandems, the top of the assembly will slide forward (on the track) to equalize this pressure. This is the 'jump' that occurs. Depending on the angle of the ground, how the brakes were set and a few other variables, the distance for the tandems to move can vary from virtually nothing, to about three inches.
If you set the trailer brakes, wait for the bags to deflate, then set the tractor brakes, it virtually eliminates this possibility. But most of us pull the one tractor brake knob and it causes both knobs to 'pop' and set both sets of brakes.
I have always set my trailer brakes and left the tractor brakes unset so any pressure could equalize. This is especially important if you're working with the old lever type tandem release. Just a little tweak of pressure can make that lever hard to pull up and I have plenty of scars on the top of my wrist where upon pulling hard, it released suddenly and smacked my lower arm against the edge of the trailer.
My point was to be careful. I have more scars on my bald head from smacking it against the edge of the trailer (and other low objects), than I care to count. Most of the time I remembered to wear a hat, which gave me a cushion.
Working around trucks can be dangerous. All I'm saying is wear protective gear such as gloves, hat, etc. to mitigate the possibility of injuries and be careful around moving machinery and trucks.
