What's the best engine/truck combo? We love Cummins in the smaller trucks, and like something easy to self service and maintain.
1.) Flatbed fully grossed with plywood
2.) Transporting our own inventory(no rush)
3.) Very few or no overnights.
4.) NYC to Richmond, and NYC to Boston (lots of traffic and BS)
5.) Cheap, ugly, uncomfortable, old, slow, reliable, fuel efficient.
Uneducated first thoughts???? Freightliner FLD120645(D) with cummins N-14 ; Mack CH613; Pete379, old cabover.......

I would be looking at a 2007 or better. So many states are looking at the emmissions standards CARB is putting out, that 2007 would be the Best Available Technology... and make sure you get a battery powered APU.
-
"2007 or better" as in a late model? I'm looking for an older vehicle price wise.
-
Go late model if you must buy one. The reason I state this is because the California Air Resourses Board is something everyone is using for an example. And they are going to try to be requiring this technology... if they do it, others will try to follow.
-
So it's not the same as small diesel trucks where older models are exempt from the new standards.
If I buy a 92 Mack, I might have meet 2008 emission standards? -
Precisely, my friend. They are requiring the cat systems, etc on any diesel engine used in a commercial application... and ANY diesel engine over a GVW over 14,000 lbs.
Good luck! -
Arggghhhh!!

Thanks Bonnie,
So everybody is just sweating it with older vehicles as the new regulations come down? I certainly have to register stuff in VA vs. NYC, since I would imagine that NY would adopt the Cali regulations. -
not likely. Not everyone lives in the people republic of california. Be carefull where you get your information from.
If you don't care too much about power and want good fuel mileage I would go for a M11 cummins. (that's an 11 liter motor) the N14 cummins is a great motor but it's big and the fuel mileage won't be as good. You want something with full fairings on it between the front axle and the rear axles. Freighliners are cheap but they feel cheap too. Kenworth t600 is real nice, the international 9200 with farings are okay too. there are others but these are somesuggestions. The international will be cheapest then the freightshaker.
I'd go for a pre 2004 or s, I forget when they started the emissions exactly but it's been a mess with the new motors, too many problems, oor fuel milage etc.
If you can't find an m11 then the detroits are good on fuel too just stick with a 350 or 400hp if you don't need 550 hp then don't buy it. The cat's are great motors but they suck on fuel and they are pricey to repair.(i know I'm going to get it for saying the cats suck on fuel) The nice thing about the cummins is they are cheap as heck to repair too! -
