$20/hr minimum

    Neither is mcdonalds,walmart but they get paid more.Truckers deserve more then a highschool kids salary.We work well over 40 hrs a week which means we should receive more per mile after 40 hrs.Staying out a month or longer should compensate for something for these OTR guys.I don't care how easy trucking is,some would dispute that.But driving trk is still a job and deserve more then chump change.

    Next time home, go into your local McDonalds and talk to the manager. Tell them you want a job, and you want to work 61 hours every 7 days, and make time and a half after 40 hours, and a guaranteed minimum gross of $1,200/wk, along with the full benefits package. Let us know how that conversation goes.

    Shortage, Websters defines Shortage as: 1. a deficiency in quantity, 2. the amount of such deficency.

    Here's the shortage, it's a shortage in drivers who want to work and not sit at home collecting an unemployment check equal to or at least 75% of what they made driving a truck. Tell you what, if I didn't have a work and moral ethic, I would gladly accept 75% of my years wages + food stamps to sit on my arse at home, playing video games for 10 hrs a day and do nothing. It's nice gig if you can get it.

    I know companies that are always looking for drivers and can't find them. Why, because they don't want to work. Last time my boss put an ad out for drivers, he had 200 applicants in three days for two positions. Of those 200, they narrowed it down to 30. Of those 30, 10 failed the roadtest. The remaining 20, 7 said they weren't interested when they found our starting pay was "only" $15.50/hr for a 10 to 13 hr day on avg., they didn't want to work that many hours. We do 100% drop/hook, but they didn't want to work that many hours. They finally hired 2, and 18 mos. later only 1 remains. The other one slammed a 20' container into a loading dock, shifting the entire load of beer out the back, taking out the door and destroying 1/2 the load.

    At $0.34 per mile and averaging 2500 miles per week you should be making $850 before taxes. This is an OTR entry level figure. Drive well, get paid well. Try to get that at McDonalds. With Obamacare very few places will give people 30 hours a week, let alone 40hrs at any decent pay rate. Sure, blame it on the "big" carriers, but I would guess that most people that see $20/hr probably want unions and voted for Obamacare. Not trying to get into politics, but sometimes it's reality. Reality right now is that Obamacare is affecting much more that most want to admit. Be thankful that even entry level drivers can afford a company med insurance policy on the 34cpm wage that this industry is paying.

    Oh, and if you can't live off of $850 a week, maybe your fiscal cliff is dangerously close too........

    I wouldn't interested in any driving job that only paid a paltry $15.50/hr either. We call that type of rate... cheap labour around the Greater Toronto Area..

    i thought that was the best part of this post as well. but they arent idiots, they are evil geniuses. theyve been knowingly constructing the financial demise of this country for decades, all so they can be rich themselves.

    op...can you tell me WHY in your little scenario that union workers deserve MORE than non union workers? thought the entire purpose of the union was to give the workers a FAIR wage? if we are gonna live in your little utopian wonderland, doesnt everybody deserve equal wages according to their skill set? what a friggin crock.

    Folks you are bringing yourselves down instead of building yourselves up ..

    Being a truck driver is much more than driving down the highway...

    You have to know your products.. You have to know you regulations....

    You have to have a clean record ( criminal, CSA, twic )

    You have to work hard... Driving a truck is hard work when you do it 12 hours a day. I don't care if you just drive down the highway, or if you deliver home heating oil on a residential route each one takes its toll on you..

    You pay the price for your job hazard whether it be obesity from lack of exercise, or breathing in fumes from gasoline, propane, or some other chemical you might deliver...

    Not to mention every time you go out the door you put your life on the line and don't know if you will come back home alive...

    It takes considerable skills to learn to shift a heavy duty truck transmission, back 53 ft trailer at 90º angle between two trailers, or drive in a snow storm...

    All of these thing take time to learn....

    Sure you can teach someone the basics in a few weeks.. AND companies take advantage of this, but all this is going to catch up with the industry..

    The will be a lot of changes in the next 5 years you will see...

    There is a shortage of "qualified" truck drivers .... And most "qualified" drivers are in their 50's and 60's.. These people are all about to retire..

    The CSA2010 is going to weed out the less "qualified" drivers who don't learn, who some of your are picking on, and some of you are sadly putting yourselves in that group.

    Now, I'm going to tell you the truth.. I don't go out of my house for less than $20 per hour and time and a half after 40 ( however you want to figure it ). I make between $1100 ( for a class B truck )to $1900 a week ( for a class A ).

    I have not made less than $20/hr since 1999. When they offer me $18 or $19 , I tell them it's not enough.. and all of you should do the same..

    As far as the unions.. There is good and bad with the unions, but one thing is clear , they do get you about $5 more an hour plus better benefits.

    My last four jobs in the last 14 year have paid the following $20/hr, $25/hr, $26/hr, and $20/Hr... The higher paying ones are harder to find but they are out there...

    Where I live a UPS TT driver makes $33/hr. Do you think they are lazy ? A construction driver makes $47/hr .. Tell him he is lazy...

    Truth be told if you are lazy and limit yourself then you will settle for $600/wk driving over the road for 60+ hours, but you don't have to...

    Mark my words .. It is all starting now.. The trucking industry is going to go thru some major pay changes, and increases in the next 5 years..

    I believe ther is a driver shorage and it's a big shortage at that. I don't believe there is a shortage of steering wheel holders and that is the reason wages are so cheap. Nuff said..
