I have 5Gig on my phone plan but the main thing I download is video, so I rely on wifi when I can get it. The problem with that
is that depending on where I park, my signal can suck or even get cut off by trucks passing between my truck and the router.
Has anybody used an external antenna to get better speed and reception from truckstop wifi? Is it worth it to get one?

    J_FROG Thanks this.

you can't amplify what the source can't give you.

you can however, google cell phone annatanaes. there used to be a booster that you stuck inside your phone. but i have no idea if they actually do anything to improve signal.

walmart actually sold them at one time.

You can buy ( for some phones) a cradle that has a external antenna, eBay has some from memory

Hawking Technolgies WiFi directional antennas .. http://hawkingtech.com/products/hi-gain_wireless_networking/_usb_network_adapters/HAWNU2.html

These do help considerably if you know where the broadcast antenna is and can aim the antenna towards this. You don't necessarily need direct line of sight but it helps. People use them a lot in RV parks. But if the bandwidth at the truckstop is choked down as typically happens by midday at truckstops, a more solid wifi signal to your machine will not help.

BTW, these will also provide some additional reach even if working through aluminum (inside truck cab)

Thanks for your replies, but I am talking about an antenna for my laptop that increases wifi reception. My cell phone data connection is fine, problem with that is the data limit which is way to small for streaming video regularly. I have seen them on amazon ect, just wanted to know if anybody uses them and if they are worth getting.

I agree. I have an Alfa and love it. It picks up about four times more networks than my internal wireless card.

I bought a "USB WiFi Adapter" model like the one pictured above off of e-bay, mine is a 10G model, shipped from Hong Kong, I paid about $23. It works great!
