Fuel heater works. Anti gel only keeps money from gelling in your wallet!

I was going through an old shoe box last week. The best I can remember, this was around 1982 or 1983. This was the first company I drove / operated for. My wife was the escort behind me. I can remember that she did not want to be there. It was her first, and last trip.

I dont put additive in till the temp hits 15. Those guys on the side could have been driving and it was warmer by 20* a little bit down the road and the tanks flash freeze. Going through there the other week temps went from 17* to -4* in about 15 miles. Watched my fuel temp drop from 67* down to 53* in a very short time.

It would be really rare of fuel geling in this day in age. Possible some other problems as cold weather causes many problems.
I say rare because stations have to put winter additive in the fuel starting in Sept. and this time of the year, the additive is strong enough for -15 degrees. They partially do this because the first place to gel will be at the pumps.
Slight possible if he has fuel from Mexico or around Elpaso and gets up here, he might have a gel problem. But even if he bought fuel in Ok. today, it would be good up into Canada.
Yes, I drove when this was a regular problem.

Thats why I like HEUI injection this time of year. Typically it returns more fuel to the tanks then a CR injection system so your tanks stay warmer. TMC has a company policy that once the temp drops below 15* , your to idle overnight. Obviously not just for fuel but that being one of the problems being factored in.

Yes, idleing overnight keeps fuel warn, also keeps air compressor warm, Even the transmission, and moisture out of things and batteries hot.
Though I have a nice generator, fridged temps. seems to be hard on so many things, that I also will idle all night.
Yet things things are not considered in mandating APU on trucks.

I priced a Carrier APU today. Seems like one might be in my future very soon. I never bought one because I was always local or home on weekends but now that I'm gone a few weeks at a time, it just makes sense

Personally, I've had couple different APU and would not recommend any. By the time they pay for themselves, their wore out and full of problems.
I recommend a cheap generator, then run everything else on . AC power. A $1000 generator pays for it self pretty quick. Quick enough to buy a new one every year.
Though I use a large Power Tech Generator, which isn't cheap, but came with the truck.
