That is correct I am border line at 39% bmi right now I am not heading to prime til mid to late Feb my recruiter told me and I quote if your bmi is too high they ask you to take a sleep study however there are other factors that play to this such as neck size and he made it a point to say yo u would not be denied employment. Because your not the only driver with a belly lol

Still there is no way they can make you do a sleep test and make you pay for it.

You are correct, they can't force you. If you refuse, you get no job and a bus ticket home.

BTW the test is $150 if you pass and roughly $2k if you fail. Both are paid in $55 pet week deductions, interest free.

The $2k covers test, machine, usage monitoring, and replacement pieces (hoses and masks)

Yes and that's why they say "You have to pay for it" because who has $1000-$2000 to pull out of there pocket or can afford to have $55 a week taken from them. I know I don't. To me it sounds like a way to make you "quit" instead of them telling you "your to over weight we can't hire you at this time" Sounds like they do it to cover there butt from a lawsuit because some over weight person got there feelings hurt cause they were told they are over weight and they are a risk.

Why cant they say "you are overweight so you are fired"? Is there some new civil rights protection for fat people? I would fire a guy who cant do his job if he is too fat. If you are 5'6" and 450 pounds you probably cant be walking on heavy haul trailer beams 15 feet off the ground. If you were 160 pounds when I hired you 2 years ago and now you are 450, why shouldnt I be able to say "you are too fat, you're fired"?

They already lost a lawsuit from this.

Why do you think they started the screening?

Ok, Here are words from a fat man. I ballooned up to 320 lbs.. Then 2 1/2 years ago I was getting the hassles of a sleep study and my weight..
I can bend forwards No I can't touch my toes.
I can do knee bends and squats and not fall on my butt.. I can stand on one leg, etc.
So I got serious and lost some weight. Got down to 265 and gained some back. Right now I'm at 270. still over weight, Working on it.
But the thing is, if you are that big that you get out of breath climbing into your trk. or climbing up steps you need to lose the weight.
Heck I was at a trk. dealer one time several years back and the driver could not stand long enough to tell the service writer what all was wrong with his trk.
He asked for a chair to sit in. not even 10 mins.
So lose the weight. You will not get any pity from this fat man..
I do heavy haul lds. and need to climb in and out of heavy equipment. Throw chains and some times tarps.
    Lose the weight.....

See that's what I am saying the BMI tests are to cover a companies butt from a lawsuit because most can't afford $1000-$2000 so instead of quitting they will have a lawsuit against that company and figure "Hey I'm over weight and no one will hire me I will just take them to court and not have to work and get lots of $$$$" lol

They lost a sexual harassment lawsuit not a weight discrimination.

i dare you to find one successful "weight discrimination" employment lawsuit in the US.

Besides, DOT only sets MINNIMUM medical standards. A company can set any medical standard ABOVE DOT they wish as long as it is applied evenly to all applicants.

The orientation Dr has 3 criteria. BMI, neck and throat, fatigue questionare.

As an instructor, I've had a few "fattys" trigger and pass the actual test with no problems, and I've had at least one "skinny" who clearly had apnea problem but didn't trigger a test.

Disclosure: I'm a fatty I have the machine and its changed my life in the total rest department.

That is awesome! Good to hear you are not a lazy person and know you need to work on yourself. Good job! What do you eat on the road? Do you do any walking or anything while on your 10hr rest? I'm 5'7" 190lbs I know in the spring time I will be walking and jogging. It's winter it's time to hibernate lol
