The most I've had anyone do is stand on the steps looking around the truck at a Border Patrol check. Well, one time I offered an officer to come inside after getting pulled over to look at my ELogs without him asking to come in. I told him I could fax or email them but it'd be quicker if he just came in and looked. The guy had been professional and respectful to that point so I offered to speed things up. Of course he looked quickly at the bunk from the front seat but never searched anything. I've refused to give consent before but I treat each situation differently depending on how the officer is treating me.
I know my rights, and have used them plenty of times, but I'm not going to say no every time just because I can. Just depends on how things go every time for me.
Do cops ask to search the truck?

Knock on wood, but I've never had one ask to search. Besides the inconvenience of the process, I don't care if they check the bands of my drawers to see if the name matches up with my license. I'll even make him a sandwich while he looks. If you don't have anything to hide there shouldn't be a problem.

As far as the federal regulations go only a authorized special agent can enter your truck without permisson, and that is to "inspect". FMSCR §396.9 (a). As far as I can see all others need to go by the state and local laws.
