Wondering which direction and company to go with out of school soon. Dry Vs. Refer etc.
What is this I here about paying for lumpers and getting reembursed? Is that just Stevens or all refer companies.
Hear you guys are really in to fuel management, what does that mean to the avg. driver?
Finally, how do you sleep with that refer clanging away all night. I'm thinking I would need headphones like at a shooting range.

Stay away from dry van, worst annual pay in the industry.
Newer reefer units aren't that noisy. All truck stops are noisy anyway; you get used to it.TRKRSHONEY Thanks this. -
Personally I chose reefer due to the economy, with all the uncertainty I figured people are still going to have to eat.
umpers are pretty much a necessity. Stevens pays for all lumpers and will do it with TCheks so no need to pay out of pocket.
Fuel management simply means they will teach you to drive fuel efficiently and they expect you to learn how to do so. There is a monthly fuel bonus for company drivers.
As far as the reefer noise, they don't clang, they are actually not that loud at all and you get used to it. Even if you haul dry vans, or flat beds or anything else, you are going to have noise... the truck on your left idling, the reefer on your right, your own apu. If you need quiet, ear plugs are suggested. Truckstops are noisy in general.TRKRSHONEY and newlife1966 Thank this. -
you do have to pay for lumpers, and you do get reimbursed, BUT....
with most companies in most situations you wil pay for lumpers using a comcheck. this will be treated like an advance, so in effect it does come out of your pay for a time, but if you send in the load info and receipts right away you generally wont notice it. but lose the receipt, or dont turn it in, and you will never be reimbursed for it. and of course theres always that one in a million company that doesnt take comchecks.
as far as sleeping with a refer unit going...most get used to it. in fact, you will see posts from people who have run refer for a long time, then switch to dry van or flat bed, and the quiet is deafening.
dont know much about stevens...ive seen some good posts on this site, but a very good friend of mine had a BAD experience with them. so id never work for them, but hes my friend, and i trust his judgment. i would not, however, try to sway another driver away from working for them...one review is still only one review.newlife1966 Thanks this. -
Companies will give you a comcheck or tcheck for lumpers, nothing is out of your pocket.
Fuel management? if you mean mpg, a lot of companies will give you a bonus if you keep it as high as you can.
And we have a refer, to us it's just white noise. Good companies have good equipment, all refers are not the same. Ours our good and you know it's on, but you'd be surprised how fast you get use to it. It's all you do.
As a matter of fact when we go home we have to have a fan running to sleepnewlife1966 and tntrockstar Thank this. -
Ok thanks drivers. Saw one of your rigs today, spoke to driver. was pretty impressed with the shiney
new T2000.
Training sounds intense, but there is a lot to learn. You all sound happy and making money. thanks again. What about your average sleep schedule / run time? i.e. drive all day sllep at night?
I heard grocery guys get up to run at 1am ?
or some craziness? -
well your sleep will vary according to your load and unload times you never really stay on a day or night schedule for long.
-
and one last question for tonight, what are Stevens lanes / accounts like into Canada? Would not mind driving up North. Can you ask for that? how does that work? Any tution rembursment?
-
If you caught a T2000 you got one of the older trucks in the fleet. I am driving one myself.
-
They do have plenty of Canadian freight and tuition reimbursement... not sure how that works, but for Canada you need a passport or passport card and you will need to be eligible to enter Canada in a CMV.
newlife1966 Thanks this.
