Cant you manual shift the new Volvos when you want to? I havent even been in one, but thats what they say. Drivers have said its nice when your in hill country.

Its just my guess, and a big one at that, but I would venture to say the companies that have autos have them for reasons. Reasons like better fleet average fuel economy, less driver fatigue, more predictable drivetrain maintenance, etc.

There is a good reason to learn the manual transmission....understanding when a shift is necessary and needed. You need to learn by RPM's the shift points (up and down), know when you are over taxing the engine and tranny. Even the auto's have the "manual" shift option, but try and force a gear in the auto then you can do some major damage.

The only auto I drove wanted to shift too much, especially under a heavy load climbing long climbs....just because the tach says you are at a shift point doesn't mean you should shift...there are times when you will need to maintain a gear by reducing the throttle and keeping the RPM/speed in a spot so not to overheat the engine.

Just like in school...you begin with the basics and progress up to newer technology...experience is the greatest teacher.

I got better fuel mileage in my manual truck than in my auto truck.

USX and PAM are phasing out the autos.

think Willis Shaw is all auto.

I drove an auto for two months, enjoyed it at first until it went to neutral and stuck there while I was in an intersection making a left turn. After that I told my fleet manager I wanted a manual back.

Yes, there is a manual mode. The D13/ishift is supposed to get good mpg. Our newer trucks will gain up to 4mph on road speed if you keep a high mpg average. 69 up from 65. Still rather keep my ISX.
