he should have had 2-4 chains crossed on the front. Then it would have never gone forward.

i always see there trucks with cross straps on roofing, if the driver left them off of this load.there's not gonna be anything he can tell safety that's gonna matter in his or her defense.

Really??? You think that sort of energy and mass and inertia can be held fast in a near instant stop? Contrary to popular belief, chains aren't the end-all, be all answer to flatbed securement and that notion is what get's some in trouble thinking they can drive like the kid next door in his Dodge Charger since they "used chains". Even if he had that particular load properly x-chained or bulkheaded, it would have still busted through in such a impact.

You can not secure every load completely. There are crash scenarios that will breach any amount of securement of virtually any load.

In fact, I venture to say that in that particular case with ingots, properly applied and winched straps will hold better than chains.

I agree, straps would have held a lot better than chains in this instance.

But coupled WITH cross chains, I doubt it would have gone off like that.

And most don't fully grasp the securement requirements as well.

Realistically, he should have had 8 cross chains on that load just because of the sheer mass in one unit. But how many would actually go to that extreme? 38,000 load /6600 WL of a 3/8" GR70 transport chain.

It's likely he only had 3 or 4 straps on it as that's what he was taught. One strap every 10'.

B.S. you don't have a freaking clue how fast he was going number one. The amount of energy that starts forward when you stop that fast is mind blowing. Unless you know ALL the physics envolved. You would show yourself much smarter if you didn't say anything.

Where were the X chains that TMC is so particular about having on all loads to stop forward movement in a situation like this! Another one of those who did not pay attention at orientation or thought "it will never happen to me".

I think that 5x 3/8's chains that went over the top and around the ingot and hooked to the opposite side would have the greatest strength in holding an ingot secure.

Considering a 3/8" chain only has a 6600 lb load rating, not really.

    You need at least 6.
