What's the typical rate you're paid to haul these? I've seen rates all over the map from $50/ton and was just quoted $18/ton granted was not compairing apples to apples it was short haul to long haul. But wouldn't a milage rate make more sense than being paid by the ton?

By the ton is standard for any freight that is being hauled not as a single unit or standard order also becuase the overall deal between the shipper and receive is probably being dealt with on a per ton basis as well. You will be able to convert your mileage rate into a per tonne rate, if you already know the location of the pick up and drop off. If you have a strong relationship with the broker you may be able to negotiate a minumum charge. If they don't load you full because of their laziness or lack of cars then you shouldn't be penalized for it. Somewhere around your breakeven point would be fair.

But the steel bits penetrating your tires in the scrap yards makes the loads not worth it.

Out of New England and NY there hauling crushed cars out to western pa and OH for a little over a buck a mile. Not even worth it, plus they mess up your trailer.
