Hi, I have been reading forums , advice, grievances, and the good stories too, anything I could get my hands on, for months now, trying to make a decision about going into trucking. I have almost decided, but am waiting on that inner "OK" I don't want to make a decision and regret it later. About me: I am 42, have no problem being away from home, for the extended training period. I have retired myself from the factory 9 to 5.I am working now but am really unhappy.
I have read enough to know that I will NOT go to a CDL mill,I have found a local college that offers CDL classes. Any way I would just like some advice from you guys. About women in trucking, and what do you think about my wanting to do this at this age,
What do you think about starting trucking at 42?

Welcome to the party Bex! Probably want to post this in the 'Questions from New Drivers' section maybe.
Now to answer your question about getting into the industry at this age and women in trucking . . . go for it! I did. Sure, I was a bit younger, but I was out there in the late 90s. There are some idjit guys that will smart off to the lady drivers, but most of them treat ya like they would their mama, daughter, sister . . . I'd like to still be out there, and maybe I'll get out there again, but there's nothing wrong with wanting to get out there! -
The community college is a good route for CDL training. 42 is young in trucking, don't even think about age in this profession, because it doesn't apply, as long as you can pass a DOT physical. Make sure your blood pressure & sugar levels are good before taking the physical. Now is the time to research & decide what type of trucking that you feel will be comfortable with.
Flatbed
Dry Van
Refrigerated
Tanker
Expedite (example-Panther Expedite-Click on Careers & then on Fleet drivers) I'm just using this as an example as to what may interest you. I've never worked there.
Best wishes. -
TY . Yeah I realized too late, that I posted this in the wrong place. I am excited at the prospects of starting a new life
Chinatown Thanks this. -

I suppose my first advise to myself would b to proof read my post..Sorry
WHAT do you think?
-
It's not what we think......it's what YOU think. Age wise, you're OK. Healthwise ? You answer that. Basically, can you adopt to the lifestyle ? Make decisions on your own ? and do you have a "can-do" attitude ?

Roehl will train you and honestly I would do it again if I had to. Was a great starter company. Don't take all the hype seriously.
-
I too have been reading these posts for the last few months and I think I am going to apply to Roehl's CDL school if my profession doesn't pick up soon. Even if it does I still may apply as I have always wanted to be a truck driver since I was a kid. I am 44 by the way.
