Sitting here in Greeley, CO at this JBS plant.

    Load DLD was 1800 yesterday.

Go in this morning @ 0500 and the load is still...not...ready.

I've been sitting over 24 hours waiting on this load. Double checked P/U# but knowing Stevens dispatch, it may well be the wrong #### number.

I keep thinking about how my uncle, who hauls Tanker, keeps telling me about how Tanker is easier, pays better (he makes roughly 3 times what I do in a week. I've seen his stub and the man covers a $250,000 home, 2 cars, 3 dogs, a wife and her mom on his one income), and has very little wait time.

Why do people haul reefer for 20 and 30 years? I know older guys who've been hauling nothing but reefers all of their career. I just do not get it. The pay just does not justify the headache. I understand those in my situation; early 20s, needs experience no responsibility, no wife no kids. I'm squeaking by. I'm here for the experience.

...but you drivers who do it for more than 2 years....why? Just WHY??? Do you just enjoy the hassle or the "challenge"? If that's the case why not just haul flatbed and actually make some decent money?

Am I missing something? Am I just a dullard and unable to see the joy in Reefer Hauling? :biggrin_2556:

You can do the same thing your uncle did; get your endorsements and go for it! I made $65K per year with tanker/hazmat and only worked 11 months a year; spent a month a year in the Orient with my wife, goofing off. Several guys in the same company were making $72K per year and some drivers with other tanker/hazmat companies make much more! So, now, why are you sitting there!

I did the reefer thing most of my career & made a real good living, but finally wised up & realized I could do even better and did something about it.

That happens when you haul meat. Especially at JBS. Maybe it's a load of beef tongue? It's takes a whole bunch of cattle to make a load of one item. You should get detention. I sat 30 hours at JBS one time and got $200. If you are running reefer you should be running long haul, 900+ mile runs. That's how you make your money. One day unloading/loading, 2-3 days running. Short haul reefer is for the birds and will run you ragged. You're new and them loads pay $3-$3.30 a mile. That's why you are there.

There are many better companies than Stevens to haul reefer. Meat is fun but I like produce 10x better with cross country runs.

You only have one year experience. The good jobs open when you have 2-3 years experience. Then you can join the secret society of elite reefer drivers! :)

You mean he can join the Elite Fleet, National Carriers?

As Condo Cruiser posted, you need those cross country runs, coast-to-coast and you will do fine with reefer truckin'.

Stevens does not pay 'detention' or 'layover' while waiting to load if you have been dispatched. Layover kicks in 24hrs after you empty out with no load assignment; detention is paid on receiving end after the 1st 2hrs of unloading time.
