Have the MVR, now I need to get the background (employment, criminal, credit, etc) before I begin applying to companies. I don't want to volunteer information that isn't on these checks.

Any website/companies suggested to get this information?

You can get your credit report from https://www.annualcreditreport.com for free, once a year, from each of the credit agencies.

Criminal comes from the state and local police.

Employment comes from calling your previous employers; these may or may not be on your credit report.

Companies hire agencies to do these checks for them; they are not cheap for individuals to do. (My parents have run them on people before renting apartments to them.) Each of these agencies has their own list of places to check, and you don't know what they will come up with.

Your best bet is to be up front with your prospective employer. If it's over 10 years old, it likely won't matter. Give them exactly what they ask for. If they ask for 10 years of employment history, give them 10 years. It doesn't matter that you got fired from that job 12 years ago.

Felony convictions are another matter. Always disclose those; the company will find out about those.

Remember, you are more likely to get fired for not disclosing something on your app (which you certify to be accurate) than you are for some petty BS thing that happened 5 years ago. So maybe one company won't hire you because of something; someone else will... but being fired for fraud will likely blacklist you for quite a while.

I wouldn't disclose anything that wasn't specifically asked for. There is a big difference between "have you ever been convicted of a crime" and "have you been convicted of a crime in the last 10 years".

Where are you from as each state will be different?

I got my criminal report on-line from ICHAT at http://apps.michigan.gov/ichat/home.aspx but that is only for the state of Michigan.

I also sent away for my criminalrecords using fingerprints taken at my local sheriffs department from both the state and the FBI. Instructions for Michigan crimal checks are found at http://www.michigan.gov/msp/0,1607,7-123-1589_1878_8311-10418--,00.html, instructions for the FBI check can be found at http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ba...g-an-identification-record-request-to-the-fbi.

If the application says "in the last 10yrs" then that is what it means. If it says "ever convicted of a felony" then that is what it means. Don't volunteer information that is not asked for but do not leave any out if it is called for. You don't want to be 800 miles from home at a different terminal and terminated there for lying on the application.

No but I've never been arrested or had a ticket or violation. I do know someone that it did happen to, though.
