i think its mostly a matter of personal preference. i believe the technology is pretty well established, so they are pretty much equally good/bad. but that's just my feeling, i dont really have any evidence. i bought the garmin nuvi, and if i needed a new one, id probably buy another garmin...im happy with it, so why change? screen size at 5 vs 7 is pretty much equally good for an average truck driver...whatever floats your boat.
guess the only thing id say about em is no matter what you buy, dont trust your gps ever. always check the routing against the atlas for restricted routes and low bridges. no one will accept the excuse that "my gps sent me that way" when you open the top of your trailer like a sardine can, or when the cop catches you on a road you are not allowed to be on. happens every day...none of em are perfect.snowman01 and dloving8915 Thank this. -
The one you can read without reading glasses.

I have a 5 inch Rand and find the screen big enough to see without getting in the way like a 7 in. One of our drivers has a Garmin and he loves it but recently he had a problem downloading the updates so borrowed my extra Rand and after said his next one would be a Rand. One thing I like is that when you punch an address in the map page and co-ordinates in the Rand Mcnally Truck Atlas show on the screen so you can look at it in the atlas and follow the route. PH67 is right, though. Never totally rely on a GPS because they are not perfect. I have not, however, had my Rand send me down a road that was restricted for truck travel yet when I have set it on the truck mode. If the route does seem a little squirrely to me then I still call the customer. It is only as good as the latest updates. If the road under a bridge has been repaved and is now 4in higher so the bridge is 13ft 2in the time to find that out is not when you are slamming into it. This actually happened to one of our drivers. He did not get a ticket for this as the DOT never replaced the 13ft6in sign.
You DO still carry an atlas for when the GPS breaks, right? -
I had a 4.3 and it was kinda small. Have a 5 now and it seems fine to me. I think a 7 would be overkill, unless the bigger screen space was used to display more and different info.

I used to use a 4.3" car based Garmin, I now have a 5" dezl Garmin, the .7" larger screen makes a difference, I would not want a 7" screen unit as it would be a distraction on the windshield due to size. I rely on mine more for ETA times than for directions, especially if I stay in my area, when I go someplace new, I do relyon it for direction, but I check the routing vs. my atlas as well.

I went with the Rand McNally 510. It's more than big enough for what I want/need and does everything I want out of it.
walstib Thanks this. -
i like the 7", we have the rand mc 720. but we have it on the dash

My teacher also said (and he said he isn't sure this is true) but in some states if your GPS is on your windshield and is too big, you could get a ticket
