Besides federal regulations, think about it. Is that monitor screen you're looking at actually the measurement it says it is? I have a 17" laptop, but it's only 17" diagonally. Height and Length wise, it's not. Now think about a chain that's supposed to hold a suicide coil down to the deck. If the chain was crossed, it has nothing to stop it, like a coil shotgun does. The coil could slide further and diagonally if those chains were crossed on a suicide. Additionally, crossing it on a suicide tends to cross one chain over the other, causing possible failure and damage, not to mention a loss of downward tension by one of the chains.

Of course, this is also why as Lantern and I mention, bringing the chains closer to the coil helps "capture" more of the shotgun coil also, to minimize that diagonal slack....and a horseshoe(C) chain does the same thing of capturing and holding.

    379exhd Thanks this.

But once again, the WLL is not that actual breaking strength of the securement device. Most people act like if you put 5,000# service on a 5/16" chain it will break. If I'm not mistaken, the WLL is 1/3 the breaking point of an article.
