All this started when MNdriver got upset that Freightliner would not warranty a truck that is well out of the warranty coverage period. Now he is trying to justify an out of compliance repair. It does not matter if it is welded, welded and gloved, welded and sleeved or stuck together with bubble gum. It is not repaired per the manufacturer's recommendation, making it out of compliance with Federal Regs. That is the bottom line.

Is this an expensive repair, to do properly? Yes it is, but that is one of the joys of owning a truck. As to why he is trying to justify a non-compliant repair, rather than just get it done correctly, only he knows and we can only guess.

    You're not a mechanic either.

Yet you are telling me that what 2 EXPERIENCED frame mechanics did was totally wrong. (as well as one in this thread). Considering the one shops reputation is made off frame repairs and custom frame work.

While Autocar may have implied that she was concerned about a failure of the repair, I never made such implication.

The points I was making were that 1: Your repair is not in compliance with the regulation, and 2: Any liability connected to that repair has now shifted to you.

    That's all.

Thanks for assuming. I AM a mechanic.

edit: and I did say that welded repairs work in practice. But they're not in compliance if the manufacturer of your truck says that replacement is the only way to effect a frame rail repair.

Then if you are a mechanic, you would understand that a factory rep stating that ALL frame repairs regardless are all done by complete replacement and not gloved or welded or anything.

That is where you fail to understand, his comment is not valid. Because you know other shops do frame repairs.

It's like talking to a brick wall with you on that.

You say he's applying it to this repair only. He's not. he's stating ALL frame repairs are complete replacement.

What you believe regarding the validity of his comments and frankly what he SAYS don't matter.

What will Freightliner put in writing regarding repair of your truck frame?

    Autocar Thanks this.

So every frame and body shop is not complying with the law then.

Every truck that's ever had a repaired frame with the name Freightliner on it is not in compliance.

THAT is what you are saying.

What will Freightliner put in writing with respect to the repair that you had done? Will they put their stamp of approval on it?

If so, then you are in compliance.

    have a nice day windsmith.

Hope you didn't get snowed in that last go round.

I don't care WHAT they will put in writing.

I'll go off what a "reasonable person" would do.
