Finding a good broker is just like anything else, takes some research. LSagentOZR gave some good examples. I'm a LS agent myself and I'd tell you to get a half dozen to a dozen good agents that you call frequently with where you are or where you're headed to so that they can look ahead for you. Good luck out there!

When you are an owner operator you need to learn the better freight lanes. One problem right now is the time of year. Another is the economy. Freight is tight all over but should improve in a couple of weeks. If you are in the west, you may need to run north and south in order to get better rates while you continue to look for something that will bring you back east. It may also be necessary for you to take short hops that will enable you to continue moving eastward. Freight is generally better east of the Mississippi than on the western side of the country.

Often, especially this time of year, brokers don't even post loads. They just find available trucks in an area and use the phone to book them. -

Well I would have to disagree with most of those brokers. The only good ones on the list are Sunteck and Landstar. Then that also depends on the agent you deal with. The brokers posted on that list are the "LOWEST" paying brokers in the industry. You forgot to add "Allen Lund". Potato, I will do you a favor since you just got your O/O. PM me and let me know what type of equipment you have and I will turn you on to some "Direct Shippers" I am a independent truck dispatcher for a living and I do it quite well. I'm not trying to get your business, I will just throw some help your way if you need it. It is good karma.

I don't know if any of you guys pull flatbeds or not but I know a guy (Freight Agent) from a small brokerage (They Pay) that has 375 loads moving out of Central Missouri going to Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa. He has good rates on these loads and they just started moving yesterday. He is looking for trucks. If anyone is interested PM me and I can put you in touch with him. He is a new agent and trying to build a network of carriers. The brokerage he works for is not new though.
