I have been running dual Wilson 2k on my Pete. My radio is a Galaxy 949, with an RFX-75, Astatic 636L mic, all work done by Bellscb. I've been happy with it, but until recently didn't know how it sounded. I've now heard a couple of other drivers comment on how clear I sound. These drivers are using Connex, Stryker or stock Cobra 29s. Most of them have the Predator antenna.

My concern has been that I loose them rather soon, once they pass me. So I'm not hearing very far behind me. I pull an end-dump that isn't really much taller then my tractor cab. The whip of my antennas are as tall as my exhaust stacks, but the coils are are of course below.

I finally located and purchased the 10" shafts for my antennas. They're not easy to find. By replacing the shafts, thus raising the coils, increase my hearing distance? I know I will need to re-tune them, probably have to cut the whips some. Due to some of the places I go, I have to be careful on how tall my antennas are. Also I would need to purchase new mounts to "bull-horn" them, which I'm really not interested in. Some of our drivers using the Predator antennas do bull-horn, because of the clearance problems.

Here's a pic of one of my antennas on my truck, and the whole rig...

the more of the antenna that is in the air, as in unobstructed, the better you will hear.

Once they pass you, then they are in front of you... They are the ones with a big chunk of metal between your antenna and theirs.

If you add 5" to the mast under the coil, you will have to cut off approximately 5" from the upper whip. The total antenna length would remain about the same.

Looking at your picture, I don't think it's going to make any real difference in performance. Dual antenna setups are very finicky beasts. If the harness isn't right, strange things happen. If the antennas aren't matched, stranger things happen.

Did Bells do the receive mod on your radio?
They did it on mine and
i feel it decreased receive range......I need to call Screwdriver and talk to him about it. Maybe they got a bunch of defective diodes?
I know it does greatly help with white noise but i noticed trucks going the other way fade out fast even with a more than a stock radio.

The 10 inch shafts may help a little but like MS Jamie said, the whips will need to be cut and everything tuned in again.
I have never had much luck with a co-phased setup.

The longer shafts are made to get your load above the cab to help with reflection.

Yep,all of my Wilsons have the 10 inch shafts but i still have that huge fiberglass roof fairing in the way....
Not sure how much the fiberglass affects it.

The only improvement you'll see going from 5" to 10" is a happier girlfriend. ;)

By passing, I meant going in opposite directions, as meeting on the highway... So my trailer and their trailer, are between us. Is that also what you're saying?

I know dual setups are finicky. I've only been running the dual setup for a few months now. Not until I switched from the single antenna (the photo is when I had the single antenna setup), to the dual, did I start receiving positive comments on how I sounded. For a while I was also using a stock Cobra mic, and changed that to the Astatic, which also would have helped out.

I've been running with some of our other drivers, and one of them would be talking to another driver passing by, and they would continue talking for some time, and I could not hear the driver traveling away from us. Understand what I'm saying?

Shouldn't "see" fiberglass or plastic at all.

Man, nothing worse than blind antennas. Did someone poke their eyes out? :biggrin_2559:
