Hey guys, thinking of going trucking in March, and I'm an audiophile (i LOVE music). Music will be my main staple of entertainment behind the wheel, and I'm sure thats true for a majority of drivers. I'll be going with a starter company, so I'll probably be issued a Prostar 2010 or something similar. How are the stereo's in these trucks? Surely they have cd players, right? Do they come with auxiliary or input jacks for mp3 players, mobile devices, etc? Final question, as a company driver, if I wanted to add my own speakers, is that possible? I'm not talking about replacing the factory speakers or adding something ridiculous like 15 inch speakers that go BOOM BOOM BOOM, but it's nice to be able to add a a couple of boxed 6x9's for some extra mids and bass to go along with the tunes. Sorry if this seems like a silly question but I do like my music to sound good, and i love my music!

My trucks for years have had CD players, last 3 had mp3 jacks and usb plugins, I have XM that is a must! As for sound systems, you're out of luck. They only truck I've had with decent speakers was a 2010 Volvo.
-
My company truck Volvo has a built in mp3 input jack, even a USB port. It also has a built in Bluetooth speakerphone and is XM radio capable as well. Whats cool is you can control the radio (volume, on off, change channel) from the sleeper without having to get up.
As for adding speakers, I don't know about that one. Most companies frown on hacking any wiring. -
I changed out a few speakers in trucks over the years. Unless you cut out the door panels and enlarge them I doubt if anyone will notice a speaker upgrade.

Prostars have crappy speakers in my opinion. The radios do have a USB jack and an Auxilliary jack though.
-
I would say all in all. The radio itself isnt to bad but the speakers wont put out much bass but you can crank them enough and fine tune it to work for you. The most IMPORTANT thing get Sirius/xm radio best thing for a truck EVER

Having run a car stereo shop back in the early 90's and having sanctioned and judged IASCA sound off's, I feel for you.
Yes trucks pretty much all have CD players and an aux input. As for adding speakers, it will depend on the compqny you go with. I have a Qualcomm in my truck and it is tied into the speakers. Overrides the left front speaker. I have never looked at the wiring, and although I doubt there is anything I can not.figure out having wired car audio for a living... the company does not know this or care... so I leave it as it is. Also, the head unit in my T2000 has weather band so have to leave that.
Likely you will have to wait until you decide to buy a truck, if you do to upgrade the system.
ps - if you truly are an audiophile, why in the world would you want 6x9 speakers? There is a reason normal speakers are round. Get yourself a pair of 6" mids and a pair of soft dome tweeters and mount them on a board, cut the board to fit the opening in your enclosure, you will enjoy much better sound.
I had an 87 Escort one time that had 14 speakers and 5 amps. It was very balanced. One 12" sub was all and that was mounted in the spare tire well so it was hidden. Two 8" mid bass rear firing in a box in the hatch. The rest were mids and tweeters and one 4" mono center channel speaker. -
I have a pair of Rockford Fosgate 6x9's that my Uncle got me for Christmas, and I boxed them with an 8 inch JL Audio W3 speaker that I've had laying around. Whats funny is that my 6x9's actually hit harder than most peoples 8 or 10 inch speakers. I don't like too much bass, and I don't like too much treble...I like an even mix, so thats why I'm wondering if it would be ok to put my box in the rig.

I also love music. I have no need for additional speakers since I do not listen too loud. I prefer to be able to hear how the truck is running and if anything goes wrong.
I have only driven 3 trucks, all have had better sound than the 8 cars I have owned. (stock stereos in all those.)
