I figured it was because it came from a warmer climate, just never saw a truck without one here in the Hoosier. That set up you got is nice, you realize yer spoiled now, right?

No tank heaters either, but it does have winter front provisions. I guess it's like Burky says it's a spec thing, just something I've never ran into. I won't forget looking for it the first night it got down around 10 degrees, froze my rear off and got some ribbing from that one. Found a use for a cordless extension cord.

My 2000 W9 didn't have one. My neighbor's Western Star didn't have one.
Go to CAT with your engine number and they can get you one. Just under $100 at CAT. Or KW can get you one too. I paid $35+ tax for mine. I'm not convinced its a quality brand. We'll see how long it lasts. My truck started the other day at 8 degrees without being plugged in. It has over 800,000 miles. -
What makes meand at the same time
is the boys that you see running around at 20 degrees and warmer with a winter front. You get down on I 10 during the winter and its pushing 60 and they still have em on.
I've never run one but have never been in colder weather than -20 either. I'm sure during some of the winters you guys get that -20 is a day time high -
It's very easy to block too much air to the intercooler. I tend to not run one unless the truck just won't maintain heat. I believe most engine manufacturers insist you not run one.
About 10 years ago I was running through NE and WY and it was so windy and cold I couldn't get the water temp up over 90 degrees and I was freezing my butt off and didn't have on. I had to go to the truck stop and strap some boxes on front I had the whole thing covered and still couldn't get it over 120 but the head wind was so bad my exhaust gas temp was running WAY high. -
Sounds like your thermostat was stuck open.
I've already opened the hood and stuck a card board between the grill and intercooler. But have only blocked up to half of the air flow. I've never had to do even that on either of the CATs I've owned. -
People even run winter fronts on their cars and pickups here.

Never ran one either.
